Janssen on Kaberle

Recommended Posts

He only got 3 games for this hit. That's absolute horse ****. I know as a leafs fan I am somewhat bias but he should have at least been suspended 4 games. What else is complete bull is that they didn't put him back on the ice after that. At least be accountable for that. That was one of the dirtiest hits this year and the league needs to do something about this. What the heck was he thinking when he went for this hit?

What do you expect from a guy whose job in the NHL was to play like the guys he should be suspending. Campbell had over 100PIM in most of his seasons in the NHL.

IMO, everyone is over reacting. Janssen went with a normal stance in hitting someone and Kaberle had his head down. The hit was 2, if not, less than 2 seconds after the pass was made.

New Jersey, but thats not why I am saying this. It's the truth.

i guess since they are trying to take the clutching and grabbing out of the game the less talented guys are running out of things to do - so they end up throwing big hits like that

thats not the first time janssen has tried to throw hits like that this season - he tried to kill one of the penguins defenceman in a game this year but missed and hurt himself running into the boards - on top of that he got a penalty for either attempt to injure or leaving his feet

its getting a little old..

im noticing a pattern here with the less talented guys taking runs at the talented guys heads

Thanks, I just wanted to know, ok? I don't need a point to ask a question. I wondered if McCabe was on the ice at the same time, ok?

Cola, Green, O'Neill and Kilger. It was during a line change, Devereaux had just come off. Whats your point?

Please name the other 4 Leafs on ice when Kaberle was hit. Thank you.

Kubina?

He broke his finger a week ago. Out for another week or two.

I thought you were going to an area where you would have said where was his teammates defending him...But I guess not

I guess I am not as predictable as some of you think I am.

It was 1.5 seconds, but most NHL players can go from blue line to blue line in that amount of time. Look at how much ice Janssen covered after Kaberle passed the puck.

Yes, the NHL is clearly biased against New Jersey while they are the least penalized team, won a BS LTI claim with Mogilny when he wasn't injured at all last season, and then continued on to trade a retired player.

Meanwhile Toronto had a goal called back that likely would've iced the game for no apperant reason, against a team they are fighting with a playoff spot for. Then around a week later their captain is high stick, cut, and the linesman sees it, who can make the call, but the ref refuses to. But in this case the Leafs were down by a goal with a little under 2 minutes left. Also against a team they are fighting with.

Ya, Leafs get all the breaks.

I don't know what kind of hockey you play, but I can tell you that two seconds is a Hell of a lot of time in a Midget AAA game, nevermind today's NHL. I am ALL for finishing your check(s), but the hit was inexcusably late. I don't know how someone can argue otherwise. Janssen never have Kaberle lined-up...he picked him out and followed him to the point of contact - and went well out of his way in doing so. He caught Kaberle high and also left his feet a little bit. A lot of people, especially in this area, have brought the Neil/Drury hit into this conversation, but, in my mind, there is absolutely no comparison - Neil made a clean hit slightly more dangerous than he had to; Janssen took a incontrovertibly late hit and made it worse by targeting Kaberle's head.

(Disclaimer: I'm a life-long Devils fan and have loved the way that Janssen has filled his role on the team. I do feel, however, that he does sometimes run a little too wild.)

I was just gonna mention that. And no offense to buffalo fans but the hit on drury was not half as bad as this one. Drury was just letting go of the puck. Yes it was an elbow and should've been a 2 minuter and maybe a game misconduct but that's it. This was an absolute diliberate attempt to injure. It was an elbow, a late hit, a charge and just a friggen dumb thing to do.

I can't wait til they play again later in the month. If the leafs are out of the playoffs which as a leafs fan I dont want to admit but it's a high possibility, Jansen is gonna get Brawled by Tucker or Belak. Hopefully Tucker. Maybe they won't dress him for that game, but that would be dumb because somebody on the team is going to take a beating. THe leafs wont even care, Kilger will just take gomez or elias into the boards hard all game.

retribution is important

Therefore if Brashear had taken out Jagr at the knees as retribution for Colton Orr's crosscheck on OV, you are ok with that? Frontier justice, right?

Jansson is a hell of a fighter. Seriously, Leafs should just go after Jersey's stars, case closed. Tucker should do what he does best and take out Gomez's knees or something. There is no place in th league for it, but Jansson was the one who started it, and retribution is important

Thats one of the stupidest things I've ever heard...

So now you young'uns are finally buying into Eddie Shore Old Time Hockey. I'm impressed. Maybe the old man was onto something all along. It must be getting close to playoffs but really that is 5 weeks out.

Cam Janssen is a no-talent goon. He goes out to hurt people. It was clearly a late hit, I have no idea why it wasnt a penalty. Maybe the refs didn't see it as it was behind the play. I think he should have gotten 5 games.

From the sound of it, I'd say the Leafs (at least Tucker) are in the old time mind set.

``I'm really disappointed in the fact we lost one of our leaders, and one of the top five defencemen in the league,'' Tucker said. ``We're in a battle for our lives, and (Janssen) plays two minutes a game. What are you going to do?

``It's a little easier if the guy plays 20 minutes a game, that actually does have an outcome (on) the game. It's a little more difficult to take when the guy doesn't play, and his only role out there is to try to hurt somebody. He hit me earlier in the year, I didn't have the puck, it was the same thing (as Kaberle).''

Tucker, who was in New Jersey when Kaberle was hurt, came out to ice level and had a few words with Janssen.

``I let him know that, for him, it's not a big deal,'' Tucker said. ``For the rest of his teammates, it's going to be a big deal. He has to understand his two minutes a game isn't going to matter. It's the rest of the (Devils) who play 20 minutes a game that are going to have to answer to what he did.''

It sounds bad to agree with, but what good does going after Janssen do? He plays three shifts a game. For Christ sake, he has 6 shots in 40+ games this year. I don't condone injuring others because thats what started this whole mess. But if ever there was a time, this would be it.

Ok, now here's the problem: the return game will be watched and reffed with an iron glove. One TML player crosses a line, he will be sitting out a long time. That is why the build-up to the re-match won't equal the reality when they play. The Leafs should have settled their business on ice in Jersey the minute they saw Kaberle down and out. The Leafs missed their best opportunity for payback right then. I may be wrong but I may be right.

You bring up a great point DS. There were a few problems which prevented that from happening. A. Janssen didn't play another shift the entire game, so nobody could get back at him personally. B. Belak, Tucker and Ondrus, the gritty guys who would step up and do something all weren't dressed. C. The Leafs were losing and really needed to win that game. Gooning it up would have likely took their minds off of the game itself, which was very important.

Couldn't agree more. I am having flashbacks of dirtbag Bertuzzi now proclaiming weeks in advance that he was going to pay back Moore. And I did not agree w/ that. It should be done then and there during the game

Or when they played the Avs the next time in Colorado, instead of something like three weeks later back up in Vancouver.

One of those four on ice Leafs had to take care of business right then. Jump over an official, whatever it takes, don't be denied. One of your most important teammates is face down on the rink. Get your face in Cam's and go down swinging. It would not have been an even deal and the player would have been risking a lot but it was a risk that should have been taken. Stand up for your teammate and your team.
