These things are awful. I can't stand getting run into by kids on these things all the time. Rink, mall, store, whatever. They're zipping around at 15 mph and running into things/people constantly. They're not allowed to skate on the surface at our rink, but anywhere else is fair game. :sigh:

heelys suck. the kids are so reckless with them on, I am shocked I haven't seen any serious injuries yet. I've seen kids take out baby carriages, littler kids, and people with food/drinks in their hands. the kids who use them are just so oblivious to everything going on around them.

I have a friend who is in her 4th year of med school and is currently doing her rotations. She actually has a pair that she uses to get around the hospital in. It's pretty funny actually.

On another note though, little kids who have no sense of courtesy in those things drive me nuts.

My girlfriend's daughter has them. She zips around the house all the time. It has gotten her interested in skating tho, she's now taking lessons every week. She had never skated on ice before, but when we first took her, off she went like she had been skating for years. She doesn't zip around annoyingly like some other kids I see. When we are in a store, she skates around but she doesn't stray away from me or her mom. i guess we are just lucky.

I wonder if kids are going to get leg injuries from wearing these shoes long term. It seems that they'd get very quad dominant after wearing heely's all the time, and all it takes is something small to screw up a ligament, muscle, or tendon with an imbalance.

I was wondering the same thing. They look really awkward to actually walk around in (with the wheels in), I think going down stairs would be tricky, and it'd be easier to twist an ankle or something while wearing them.

EDIT: of course, that doesn't really matter if you glide out in front of a car or something...

Took a couple weeks off the get go for the local kids to catch on, but now 100% compliance, backed completely by the youth organization. The hard part is for out of town teams. But they are pretty good about it, they either see the sign or we just have to tell them once. Only a Couple times this year have I had to remind a kid more than once. But we have a Bantam Thanksgiving tourney next weekend, hopefully the luck continues.

Well, the bantams think they themselves are cool, but not too into the heelys. A couple here and there, but more so the younger siblings running around while their brother's on the ice. I Hope someone sent the word out to the teams that they're not allowed.

Those darned kids and their new fangled clothing. Underwear higher than their pants - haven't they heard of suspenders ? The dang shoes with them wheels !? Who ever thought that you needed wheels on your shoes. Why back in my day we walked 20 miles to school and we didn't need any wheels in our shoes. We were lucky to have shoes. Oh yeah and I hate their devil music too !

From watching anklebiters zipping around in these, my thought is that it would dramatically increase the force exerted on the knee, specifically by forcing it into full extension very rapidly.

I can see an increase in ACL/PCL injuries and a LOT of long-term problems relates to flexibility down the road.

For some of you who don't like Heelys, it may get worse before it gets better. Heelys went public late last year, offered at around $21, and peaked around $40. Now it's around $6. Injury reports affected sales and stock price. Now, there is a class action lawsuit. Price of the shoes are plummeting, so you may see some additional takers now.

Personally, I can see both the fun and annoyting sides. I think the key is parenting and scope. My 11-year-old daughter and I both enjoy them, but they are not allowed as everyday shoes if the wheels are left in. With wheels on, they are treated like our other wheeled toys: bikes, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, ripstiks, etc. Until she proves she's skilled enough and responsible enough to ride on her own, there has to be some sort of adult supervision and protection. Let kids be kids, as long as they respect those around them.

I like watching the kids take diggers on them and then i chuckle to myself because those things are retarded. I used to work in a snack shop in a rink and we had a ton of kids with those things on.

I have two kids an 8 year old boy and a 9 year old girl who both skate (girl is a figure skater). My 8 year old has had Heelys for two years and loves them. He usually gets a pair for Christmas and crams his feet into them for a full year. My son wears them a lot but isn't allowed to wear them to school, church etc. He also has rules on no wheels when in parking lots or when it is crowded. He is pretty good about following them and stays close to us when we are out in public.

My daughter got a pair last year for Christmas and broke her wrist the next day. I should have put her in protective equipment because she wasn't nearly as comfortable on them as my son is. She never really got back into using them again and won't be getting another pair this year for Christmas.

The Heelys are dangerous but you need to add a dose of responsibility to them. I do keep my son on a pretty tight leash when he is wearing them so he isn't crashing into other people or putting himself in danger.

My thoughts are that you can't put your kid in bubble wrap and you need to let kids be kids and have fun.

Who ever came up with the idea for these is asking for a swift kick in his balls. I worked in the Walt Disney World parks for a while on an internship and quickly learned how horrible these things are.

The majority of the kids I saw wearing them didn't give two shits about where they were going, who was in front of them and who they might run into. Whats worse was the parents were totally arrogant about them as well defending their kid's "right to wear them".

I had a great laugh though when a Welsh family came through and talked to me about how much they hated those yanks skating around and causing many near collisions. I agreed and expressed my distaste for them as well while noting that while they weren't allowed inside the parks, once they got through the gate there was nothing we could really do to stop them while trying to "preserve the magic for our guests". They understood and continued in while sure enough, a 10y/o kid came barreling through on his heelys looking straight at the ground while skating. The family's 8 year old son proceeded to shoulder check the kid knocking him square on his ass and then adding "skate around that you pratt!" Without a doubt my second greatest day working there.

And yet again... isn't it the parents's responsibility to disallow obnoxious behavior? I think the only way the Heely issue will end is if insurance companies publicly deny claims on account of wearing them.
