A rules question, regarding a pulled goalie

Recommended Posts

This was posted over at the caps boards, and one answer was whoever was in goals for the majority of the game takes the loss, the other was, whoever was in goals when the game winning goal was allowed, takes the loss, but neither really address this properly.

So, rules afficianados, if you will...

I was playing in a league game last night (I'm a goalie) and a wierd situation occured. The score was tied with 6.6 seconds left and there was a face-off in the offensive zone (our opponents defensive zone). I was pulled in favor of an extra attacker, as our team captain wanted to go for the win. The opposition won the face-off and fired the puck the length of the ice, scoring on the empty net with 1 second left. So the final score was 5-4 for the opposition, but since I wasnt in goal for the winning goal, do I get saddled with the loss? Empty net goals dont count againt my goals against average and they dont effect my save percentage. I've never seen this happen before, and I'm not sure what the ruling would be on it. Any of you in-depth hockey knowledge types have a clue on this?

Thank your captain for that brilliant strategy move. Did you guys need the win or something because 6 seconds is plenty of time to lose with no goalie in net, as you saw first hand.

Well the NHL rules state that the goalie in net when the GWG is scored takes the loss, technically "empty net" is a goalie on the record. Hence a goal scored on an empty net is not counted against the goalie's stats. Playing in a beer league I doubt they're going to get this technical and you'll probably be saddled with the loss. BTW, pulling the goalie in a tie game with six seconds left is pretty dumb.

Why? The mighty ducks did it with much more time on the clock. Maybe they just had heart.

It's not my team, I don't know how crucial the win would have been, it was someone else asked it over on the caps boards, and there was a mixbag of answers, so I thought I would take the question here
