stick length affect on shots

Recommended Posts

Now with the whole taper being at the lower portion of the shaft, I dont think cutting down the top is going to affect the stiffness rating as much as it did with the non-tapered stick.

Nike didn't bother to differentiate between their taper OPS such as the vapor xxx lite and the NBH e90 which could be interpreted as:

(1)the difference in flex that occurs between taper and non-taper sticks, or for that matter between two different NBH tapers or two different NBH std/non-tapers is marginal;

(2) the numbers they gave were an average estimate for all their sticks;

(3) they didn't bother to check because the differences in design between all their sticks that actually have effect on flex when shortening a shaft is neglible;

(4) the difference between taper and non-taper flex change when shortened makes no difference in the manner that they do the testing (don't know how they do it).

however,

it may feel totally different where in a taper shaft it might feel like it makes less difference when you either flex the stick against the floor or shoot which still does not mean that the flex didn't change the same amount.

for example in golf shafts flex is often measured by frequency analysis. Some shafts have the same frequency so the manufacturer labels them as such whereas they might feel totally different although the machine reads the same freq. (some used weight sorting for flex ratings, some used a combination of both).

this most notably happened in steel shafts of two different constructions by Royal Precision shafts (formerly Brunswick Precisions shafts) the Rifle shaft might have read as a 6.5 freq. and the standard "stepped" Precision shaft might also have had a freq of 6.5, but the Rifles tended to feel stiffer to most players, eventually leading Royal Precision to change their freq recommendations depending on model.

Also, there is method of shaft flex that uses more subjective criteria taking into account the shafts torque rating, weight, and kickpoints and making a functional or playability flex rating that takes into account not only "the numbers" but also the "feel".

Yes I know this is hockey, but one thing I try not to forget is that just because something feels a certain way does not make it so, and just because the method of testing tells you something about a shaft this is also not absolutely correct - because the method of testing is flawed.

If the flex were exactly the same on both lengths there wouldn't be a huge impact on shot performance

I just took a bunch of cheap wood sticks with my lie and cut them to different heights, and used each one for a pickup game. After three sticks, I found the PERFECT height for me. I don't know about my shots, but my stickhandling, passing, blocked shots, and poke checking are better now that I've found my ideal stick length and lie.

is there some kinda of forumula to calculate how much stiffer the stick gets when you cut it. the guy i bought my stick from said something like 5 lbs for every inch. can anyone validate this

There's a conversion chart somewhere around here. Try the search. I think I asked the same question last year.

I wonder what the length of nike bauer stick - Youth 42, Jr 52 flex.

will it affect if the stick length is at chin (without skate) or below chin (with skate)
