Some of you guys know from my post a few months ago that he has cancer because of smoking. In the last few weeks he's gone downhill pretty fast. They had to do emergency surgery this past Wednesday because the cancer put so much pressure on his insides that the colon and bladder became one (he now wears a colostomy bag). The doc said that when they cut him open that his inside is completely covered with cancer, so it shouldn't be too much longer until he crosses the bridge. The doc and my mom decided it was best no to tell him how bad it was because he's been in very bad spirits and they feel that he would just give up if they told him the news. All they told him was that they had to remove 12 inches of colon and the cancer is in there as well.

My dad and I have never had a buddy-buddy relationship, but I pitty him because he obviously knows he will not be able to see my son (who's 4 years old) grow up, and I feel sorry for my son because he'll have no grandpa (my wife's father died of cancer before we ever met).

Guys: we all play a physical sport, which does have a very slight element of danger/potential of serious injury, so do your families a favor and take care of the rest of your body as you should. Treat it like a temple and just beat on it during hockey.

be safe,

Dave

My senior year in high school, the docs gave my best friends father six months to live. Flat out told him no more than six months. 14 years later he passed away. Enjoy every moment that you're able to spend with him and with any luck you will have more than expect.

Real sorry to hear that. You are in my prayers.

Just talking about this, I've just finished a refresher course in first aid. And thru the 2 days, I kept thinking about what would happen if my kid was the one on the table instead of the practice dummy. Just puts everything into perspective. Went home and spent the day rough-housing with my son (got kicked in the face 3 times on Fri, but its all good)... also made me think that I want to up my insurance coverage to ensure that he and my wife are kept safe and have enough to survive if anything happens to me.

Those times, make me regret the complaining I do....enjoy the time you have, dont let yourself just get through the day....enjoy each one!!!!

My friend's going thru the same thing. Her dad was only supposed to have a few months a year ago. Everyday is a blessing where they can hang out together. Life really comes into perspective when you're working with a countdown. If I had to make this hockey-like, it's like a game where you're down a goal with 2 minutes on the clock with the goalie pulled. Then you know every second counts.

I wish your family the best during this time. My boss is finally showing the effects of his chemo (I think 5 sessions a week) and lost all his hair so I went in for the ol' #1 today.

Man, i've been doing the same thing with my little guy lately as well, even though i'm fighting a bad leg because of a wicked slaphot that hit below my shinguard. It certainly puts it all into perspective. Even though I never was buddy-buddy with my dad, I make sure that what was lacking between my dad and myself is there between my son and I.
