Cage fit questions

Recommended Posts

I have never bought a cage separately from a helmet/cage combo before.

1. Do different cage sizes mainly differ in the length, fitting to the length of your face down to the chin? Or are the different sizes wider/narrower as well?

2. I see that the J-clips have 2 sets of holes, so that if I move them up or down I can effectively shorten/lengthen where the bottom of the cage hits my chin, when I flip the cage into place. Is this the correct way to fit a cage? How do I know if I need a different size cage, or can I just move the J-clips?

Thanks!

The main difference in sizes is the vertical length of the cage.

You can adjust the J clips to what feels comfy with the cage. Ideally, you want your chin to rest securely in the chin cup when everything is buckled.

You can expand your cage horizontally...though probably not the best idea. I had issues fitting onto a Jofa 690, so I pulled the cage to make it a tad wider, and it helps to use metal J clips since they are thinner.

Yeah, I've done that to my cage. Wrenched on it till it would go around my wide melon.

I can't ever find glasses wide enough to go on this head of mine either. I feel so "gifted."

Re: my LHS....My LHS happens to be HG. The good is all the stuff that goes on sale every now and then (matching the website price, but no shipping), the bad is the kids working there haven't always had lots of hockey sales experience.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

OH man! I wouldnt say your LHS is HG. There are tons of places around that are actually willing to help. Its a shame, cuz HG does have a ton of inventory, and are cheaper than us Ma and Pa shops, but you wont get an ounce of help there.

Alright, I fess up. HG is the closest to me, so I go there a bit. I have all my skate work done at Westwood, and also have bought a few things from there. But the truth is with the sale prices at HG when I can catch it at the right time, it's hard to beat for something like a shaft, blades or protective equipment.

tsanga, i sympathise with you. Although about the same distance apart, the one shop carries everything, and has good prices but the staff are generally uneducated. The other shop is truly a LHS, they are knoledgable and have great service. The problem is they only carry products from The Hockey Company and Easton(I'm more of a Bauer guy myself). I go there for all my skate service and other random repairs. I always feel bad when i don't buy from him.
