New Skates?

Recommended Posts

Here is my situation. I couple years ago I started playing again after taking a few years off to concentrate on finishing college. When I started back up I bought a pair of Bauer 8000 (7.5D) on clearance (the year the 8090's came out). As I have come to find out, Bauer didn't put a whole lot of padding in the ankles and after about a season and a half my ankle bones were being pressed against the hard boot structure. I have fairly boney ankles but this is the first time I have ever had this problem.

At the start of last season, I switched to a pair os 8090's that I bought at the Star's end of season equipment sale. These fit OK except for that fact that the tongue is too wide. When I tighten up my skates, the edge of the tongue rests on my ankle bone creating a pressure point.

Here is the list of skates that I have been in since I started playing in fall of '95.

Bauer 3000 (Flo-Fit) (8.0 D) - Bought a little large thinking I might have a mini growth spirt in High school.

CCM 652 Pump (7.5D) - These never fit my feet and turned out to be an experiment .

Bauer Comp, Bauer 5000 Composite, Bauer Air 90, Bauer 5000 (the gold ones)(all 7.5D) - These all fit good but just wore out; some are still usable but are tight in the width.

This brings us to the 8000's

To solve my problem, I was looking at either One90's or RBK 9k's (7.0D) but there isn't an LHS within 3hrs of me and that one has had me size once (the 8000's on clearance). One solution would be the custom route with additional padding.

Ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

what hockey do you play? i only ask because the one90's and 9k's are considered top of the line, and i would think you could "get away" with a model that isnt as expensive if you played beer league or something. also, you say that these skates: Bauer Comp, Bauer 5000 Composite, Bauer Air 90, Bauer 5000 (the gold ones)(all 7.5D) fit you well but just wore out. if you liked them, why not go for them again? anyway, that's just my opinion, hope it helped.

You mention buying skates from the Stars' end of season sale, where are you located? If you are in fact in the Metroplex, there are TONS of LHS around.

Also, if you are in DFW, welcome. There seems to be quite a few of us around here.

mew1838,

my only hesitation is that I have been told that the pump doesn't lock the ankle/heel back like traditional padding.

ccc8190,

I play upper level beer league. It's pretty compettive as it is moslty ex pros, and guys that have played in college and juniors. I have always had top end skates ever since I broke my ankle in some second hand POS's. Also, when I say the old skates are worn out I mean they are pretty close to useless. The gold 5000's are probably in the best shape but they are actually too small for my foot (I think they are actually 6.5EE).

Methane,

I am actually in Wichita, KS. I am planning on going to the 4-day Glantz clinic in July at the FB Star Center. My girlfriends parents live the the Park Cities so we go down there quite a bit but I don't know when I will be able to get down there next (Memorial Day weekend possibly).

From what I have read, the Vapor XXXX's seem to have more padding but having tried on the XXX's and finding they don't fit my foot very well i am hesitant to get them without trying on.

XXXX's have a ton of ankle padding, and a relatively thin, narrow tongue. I used to wear 30s but found the 40s to be a bit to wide contrary to claims that they fit identically. You should definitely try to find a place to see how they fit.

i understand that the skates you have now are too worn to wear. i was suggesting that since you said you liked them when you had them, why not search around ebay/online for another pair of the same?

also, after re-reading your first post again, i realized i forgot to give my input on the one90. i have the skate, and i think that it is very good. the tongue is relatively thin and the ankle padding is definitely adequate. the only thing that was not good about the skate was that the front part of the boot was very tight around the front part of my foot. after a month or so of skating, they broke in fine and now feel good.

the Pump does lock your heel in nicely... the downside is, the air bladder does have some give, a lot less give than a normal ankle pack.

As i've posted I couldn't fit in Vapor XXXs but was able to fit into vapor XXXXs... like uhhh a glove.

I'm a bit worried about the thin-ness of the tounge because I'm feeling a bit of lace bite. I'm also not incredibly happy that I now have to put my shin pads on the outside of my skates... oh well, can't have everything I guess.

I like wearing my shins outside the skate, but purely for curiosity sake....why do you say you have to put your shins outside? Everyone else I have seen wearing XXXXs wear their shins inside. I have worn my skates twice, and have had no issues with bite.

They aren't as deep as my tacks are so I need a 16" for one(before I needed a 15.5"). And my Vector shin pads are just too wide for them to fit inside... but it might give me a reason to look into the one90 shins. ;)

Great shins...I have the Nike V12 and V14 shins, which are what the One90 shins are, and I really like them. You can wear them both inside and outside the skate. I have saved a bit of money with those shins, as I no longer need tape to keep my shins in place.

I like the design of the calf wraparound setup and the knee cradle on the one90 shins, which caught my eye. I figure with the taper on the bottom of the shin guard might let me tuck them in. Luckily my Vectors are in really good condition so I can sell them to offset the cost of the one90 shins if I do get them.

Thanks for the input from everyone. I have a friend who has an upholstry shop that I am going to see if the tongue of the 8090's can be narrowed up a little around the ankle bone. Hopefully it will work or else I am going to have to make a special trip somewhere to buy new skates.

I'll keep you posted.
