LHS employees help- Midget stick sizing advice Hypo (short male non-midgets)

Recommended Posts

I completely understand that stick length, blade length, and stick flex are generally considered to be completely up to personal taste/preferences etc.

However... just as you are unlikely to put someone who wears a size US 7 Nike running shoe into a size 12.5 EE NBH One90... there must be some general advice you would give as far as this hypo goes... (looking for which choice you'd advise the midget towards... since he won't really know until he tries, and advice helps customers to make informed choices...)

Ok so let's say you have a midget or man or dwarf that is only 4'7" tall - midget works well because that does imply that the person is not scrawny, or of small stature.. since midgets are often stocky or of solid build (see Time Bandits) they are of the build of women... so anyhow...

given this person's total height of only 55". given the "general rule" of keeping the stick somewhere between the players nose and chin when standing on the floor in street shoes (i.e. flats) let's say that the midpoint of the area between the nose and chine is 49". That would mean for many OPS stick he would need more than 10" cut-off. unless he likes playing a very long stick....

if we look at the NBH '07 catalog p.72 (see modsquadhockey .pdf catalog files) there is a chart that gives the approximate effects of cutting down a stick... generally making them stiffer as you go shorter... i am assuming that similar effect (and somewhat proportional effect) occurs in other brands of OPS/composites as well... for SR 77 Flex (the softest listed SR flex) cutting down 4" changes the flex to 92 Flex... 6" makes this 77 flex into a 100 flex... now ... an additional four (or possibly more cut off...) so for each 2" of length the flex increased by 8 points... if this continues at the same relationship the ten inches would be a 40 point bump in flex... making the stick a 117 flex which i assume is super super stiff?

** note i do not know if after the 6" the flex would increase by 8 flex points for each additional 2inches or not... although due to basic material properties it would increase by some amount for each additional shortening above 6"**

also... if the person did this to an intermediate shaft... let's say he only wants 7" taken off that shaft... let's say that puts him to say 90 flex...

(i've noticed that intermediate shafts often have thinner walls... will this be a durability issue despite the shaft becoming stiffer?)

but the guy according to strength and ability to load really belongs in that 77 flex...

the guy also has larger thick hands - so that the intermediate feels a little small... the blade is also smaller too... does that mean the intermediate OPS blades are also a little bit weaker/softer?

which stick do you think the midget type person should be in? the SR shaft that has now become super stiff? is this such a bad scenario for a person that belongs in a 77 flex as far as strength goes? Having a shaft that might be a 117.... what are the negatives? loss of slap shot velocity since it cannot be loaded properly? any change in accuracy? i assume the feel for wrist shots and passes will be diminished because of the resultant lack in feel from the stiffening of the shaft...

ok so I know that the midget or similar in the time bandits/Youngblood hypo is screwed by not having the best match for him... but is it so bad having a stick that is so much stiffer than you need? or is he better off doing the intermediate route (where that stick also ends up at least a little stiffer than he needs or prefers the feel of..)

Why can't he use a junior OPS or shaft? When cut down to accommodate his height, the flex should be close to the desired ~77 flex. Unfortunately, he's fallen into a crack in our society in which the vast majority of products and services available do not cater to.

I've fit a small man in a junior stick and he had no problems. However his hands were small, not big as you describe. I would say hand size is the biggest factor. As long as that's right, the stick will be usable. Yes you would have to cut it down and stiffness would increase, but this is the closest you'd get to a proper fitting stick. Heck, I see 8yo's out there with cut down senior sticks and their parents say they are doing fine with them, so, oh well, who knows.

That's because the kids that are doing fine dont use the flex of the shaft, but instead the use there strenght and the puck goes over the net and there parents are like "WOAH, nice shot."

jr sticks, works for short girls, works for short people. If they are stronger and have bigger hands try inter... hand size/strength is the biggest issue.

What about fitting this player for a Jock-plus combo short? Will he get a Jr size waist with a youth cup or a Sr size to accommodate his Johnson? These are the tough questions you should be asking.

i want to answer this question, but... the anti-politically correct part of me shouldn't be heard on the forum!

Separately - is mixing and matching sr and jr allowed? or is that a custom order?
