Looking for a replacement shaft

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I guess soon I'll be wanting to replace my old Mission Team Comp Ether biomorphic. I really love this shaft, but it's starting to lose some of its pop and I know it won't last forever. What I'm looking for is something with a similar geometry (rounded edges, thin).

I'm not super hard on my sticks, but durability is a major issue because us graduate students don't really have the scratch to replace composites once every month or two. I play in beer leagues and pick up hockey...neither of which are terribly competitive. I need something in a stiff to extra stiff flex, I'm on the heavier side of the scale. My team comp is a 12-9 and feels good in my hands.

I'm kicking myself for not picking up a couple of the team comps that hockeyworld.com had for sale a couple of months ago. I know almost any shaft I pick up these days will have better performance, but which ones are durable, inexpensive and have that slim, rounded feel?

...I sent you a pm.

I wouldn't really say that any shaft will have better performance, Mission was waay ahead of their time. As for shafts with rounded shapes look for Vectors with that little "C" after the model number, that's contoured. The XXXlite shaft will probably be rounded but I'd question the durability on them. Off the top of my head I can't think of other shafts that are rounded but I'm sure I'm missing a couple.

...Mission was waay ahead of their time.

I've always thought my team comp was just as good as a lot of the other midrange shafts my buddies have...just older and more fiberglassy. On the other hand, mine's held together for a lot longer than some of their lower end synergies, etc.

In my opinion, the team comps and flyweights were really ahead of their time and possibly still are ahead of the times. They are pretty darn durable for how much performance and how lightweight they are. I didn't find a stick I liked more than my flyweights until I got my response lite, previous to my flyweights(which JR turned me and others onto) I loved my synthesis... The flyweights just felt nicer and seemed to perform better.

You might find an L-2 on close-out that would be close to fitting your needs. But I've never felt the earlier Mission shafts, so I can only compare it my other sticks, and it is by far the slimmest and most rounded.

the dolomite shaft by warrior would probly do the trick for ya

if u can handle the tapered blade situation :P

I know that your ether was tapered, but you may want to have a look at the Easton Cyclone. it's a standard shaft, but other than that, it fits in almost perfectly with what you're looking for: Thin rounded grip, available in 95 flex, low cost (can be had for around $75-80) and it's made with the same process that easton uses for their other top-end shafts (compression molding) and it should offer similar performance than the team comp. (tradeoff between better materials/construction vs. it being a standard and the ether being tapered)

I went from a biomorphic mission dangler 12-9 to the 95 flex cyclone a few years back and it was a seamless transition.

If you're dead-set on a tapered shaft, the dolomite is a good choice, as is the bauer vapor XV if you can find one. they're both a bit more squared off than the mission biomorphic, but still a smaller handle shape.

I'd second on the cyclone. Its a great shaft, two of my buddies have been using them for more than 3 years now, and even with all the slashing and stuff, it still holds up.

3rd on the Cyclone....There are a number of solid standard blades out (Warrior AK27 comes to mind) that should leave you with a very lightweight, high performance combo.

I've used the cyclone (silver tip), and had two of those. The only reason I didnt go with the graphite one was back then the graphite one was more than 50% more expensive.

I saw a cyclone (reddish brown) one on Singapore's yahoo auctions a few months back, but didnt have the cash to pick it up.
