Vaseline

Recommended Posts

hey, just wondering if using vaseline for bearing lube would be a good or bad idea. anyone try?

thanks,

Try on a old pair of crap bearings and let us know :)

I've used a synthetic grease that was the same consistency with positive results before.

Are you guys really that cheap?

Not that cheap, but there's no reliable source of hockey gear where I'm at. There's a lot of skateboard shops, but apparently the local kids just ride the bearings until they are shot, then buy new ones so none of the skate shops carry lube.

Having run out of purpose-specific lube, I've recently started using Zoom brand oil, which is intended for industrial bearings/turbines. It works good, but breaks down a little faster than I'd like causing me to have to clean/lube about once a month skating 2-3 times a week outdoors. The bearings using the synthetic grease got cleaned/lubed at the start of the year and the grease has held up good-helps keep a lot of the dirt out and haven't required a cleaning yet (someone else on the team uses them).

Yeah, its easy to order online, but hard to swallow paying 10 bucks with shipping/handling for a tiny bottle of lube. If it was around, I'd use it. Its not, so I make do.

this isnt going to sound good. Got to napa and get some grease. It is blue. You use it to pack bearing on automobiles. take the sheilds off and place some( size of a dime) in your palm. Then work it through one side of the bearing until it comes out the other. Make sure you soak them in something like parts cleaner first.

Vaseline might not be able to withstand the heat generated in your bearings and could slow you down as a result. Are you playing indoors or out, this is true epically if you play outdoors but since Vaseline is so thick it might cause dirt and small particles to get stuck in it, and thus stuck in your bearings.

i play in outdoor rinks, so its pretty dusty, i have a feeling that the vaseline might gum up the works, like you said, but i'm gonna try anyways on a crappy set.

we used to use vaseline to protect bearings when speedskating in the rain prior to long distance events, of course typically you're fine when skating..its afterwards that everything seizes..

if you are in a bind...castrol transmission fluid...very similar consistency to the BSB Lube that featured Castrol brand oil with the same pink color in the past.....otherwise a lighter weight bike chain lube/oil can be used..

I have been skating on a crappy set of bearings for a while now and use 3 in 1 household oil. It works really, really well. It only cost me $2 i think... When i finally give in and buy a set of Super Swiss 6 or Ron's/Ballistech Rockets, i'll prolly switch back over to skate lube.. but for now, I can't tell the difference.

I have that BSB/Castrol brand oil stuff and it really works well.

Previously I used WB40, and it worked instantly, but it removes the grease as well, so after a short while I would be worse off then when I started.

WD40 does the exact opposite of a lube..it displaces all the water..WD-40 = Water Displacement 40, it was the 40th prototype...

it also has an acid that likes to eat through the plastic/nylon bearing races in some bearings..
