precursor

why girdles are good

Recommended Posts

owch.jpg

I have seen a lot of people on here saying that they don't wear a girdle, so I figured I would post up what happened when I didn't.

The short version was that we rented out a rink for a couple of hours to get some practice in. Since we were taking it light, people were just wearing gloves, helmets, and shin guards. I figured fuck it, I won't need a girdle.

Well, about an hour into it, a buddy took a slapshot, and of course I instinctually got in front of it.

I am glad I didn't take the shield off my helmet as well, about 10 minutes before that, a puck deflected off my stick and dinged me where my eyes would have been.

protective equipment for the win, even when your "taking it easy"

Quite a shiner. But still not worth wearing a girdle.

Girdles slow ya down to much, say like friction in between your thighs if that makes sense. Extra baggage.

The thigh area has enough padding on its own. However I would only see using a girdle as helpful when you fail on your tail bone. But I only know one person that has ever gotten hurt from falling on it wrong, so Ill stick with keeping my game up and not wearing one.

wow, that came from a roller hockey puck? ouch. theres some girdles that dont rub in the thigh areas because theres no inner padding there, i think one brand is force. i have mission d1's and theyre pretty useless because im more worried about a fall on the butt.

lol I have a Thorax adv. It's really comfortable.

The point being that it was lucky it hit my side where I got some fat and no major organs, had this hit me somewhere else, it could have easilly been much worse.

But yah, this came from a normal rbk rollerhockey puck.

Thats nothing, I once took a wrister in the thigh from a Melvin who couldn't hit a barn door. The puck hit me on the flat, so you could actually see "pro puck" branded on my skin reversed!

PS: Dude, do you wax/shave your cheast, looks like regrowth there. ;)

its a lifesaver.

Today's roller girdles without the hard stuff are identical to the last football hip pads I used. At that time hockey helmets were a smart idea for the future. Mission's girdle with small amounts of hard stuff is very nice and a smart idea for a lot of us right now. I have a Thorax shirt too. Besides saving my arse from harm, the light padding makes me overconfident so I can go out there and have more fun playing beyond my means. :)

I never play without my girdle. Or without my elbows for that matter.

I go in with the notion that PAIN SUCKS.

And since I can't bounce off the walls like I did when I was 17, I need all the help I can get. I still have the notch marks on my shins from the night I learned that shin guards were a great idea.

I just wish that there was a manlier name for the girdle.

yeah, i went about 12 years without a girdle... and i started to find those times id bounce up again and keep playing REALLY hurt and hampered my playing ability.

its not so much the pain that bugs me, its playing badly.

yah, its definitely not the pain thing either. When I took that shot, I just skated it off and kept going. But, as you get older (26 here) it definitely can hamper other things in life. Had I been turned around, and that dinged my kidney, it could have been worse.

I'll still never wear one.

They slow you down and they're not comfortable.

So you never have any trouble passing slow, uncomfortable guys that are wearing them, right? :)

you guys that say you wuoldn't wear a girdle"cuz it slows me down" also probably beleive that the RBK 'O' stick speeds up your swing...

I would like to see you prove that a girdle slows you down, in anyway at all... form fitting, up to 16way stretch materials.... it would slow you down as much as hairy legs would, none

would you play Ice without pants?

Yah, I totally agree with Skooled. Just because roller hockey "isn't as tough" as ice hockey doesn't mean that you shouldn't protect yourself properly. That bruise was minor, and had no lasting effect. But, take that shot somewhere else with no padding, and maybe things could have been worse.

I have noticed that a lot of players tend to back off more with less pads on, and therefore, they aren't out there being as fast as they should be.

Oh no, um there faster cos their not wearing a girdle... They def don't seem to want to commit to the shot block, thats for sure... i did notice here that the players that say they don't need one tend more to be the primadona's of that certain league* and think that offence is the only defence, if you follow me.

*there is always an exception to the rule though

Even though my league is only what we call 'Monday Night Contact' (no hits, just bump and grind in front of the net, moving each other off the puck on the boards, and everyone's able to go to work the next day) I still wear a girdle, shin guards, elbow pads, and a helmet. I don't dress to protect against things I can anticipate - I dress to protect against the things that I can't: Errant shots, accidental collisions, stray sticks, and my own innate clumsiness.

The few serious injuries we've ever had have been the guys wearing hockey gloves and a helmet for gear. They fall in a crowd, or slide into the boards at a bad angle, or just land wrong all on their own and suddenly someone's got a broken tailbone or a cracked patella, both of which take a long, painful time to heal.

Same.

A lot of the guys on my team don't wear cages or shields. After a week of wearing an Itech shield/cage combo, I was thinking that maybe I would take it off, and just play with a helmet the following week.

Five minutes later, a wide slapshot hit the shaft of my stick and drilled me right in the middle of the shield. I probably would have had a broken nose, missing teeth, or a nasty gash. Needless to say, I didnt take the thing off.

I dont feel it makes you "faster", rather its just a matter of wat you feel comfortable with. Hell, I dont wear a girdle, Elbows, or shoulders (not that many do anyway). Just what you prefer
