Cracked holders

Recommended Posts

I got a pair og Graf ultra G5's off of ebay with LS2Power holders on them. Man I love em, best skates I have ever had. The problem is that the rivets have started to come loose and one has fallen out. I need to take them to the shop for new rivets all around. When I was looking at the holders I noticed 2 cracks, one in each holder where the rivets go through the holders into the skate. The one crack is only on the out side of the rivet hole. The othe crack goes from one side of the hole to the other and is about 3/4" long. The problem is that I don't have much $ but I have a feeling that I should replace the holders while I have them in the shop. Do you guys think I could get away with these holders for a while longer or should I not even bother with them and put new ones on?

I'd definitely replace 'em now. Would you rather be short on cash for bit, or have a broken face as a result of your holder cracking off and you smashing into the boards? I wouldn't take any chances man...haha. A broken face doesn't sound like much fun to me.

I have to agree with the above post-ers. Replace it now before it gets worse and breaks... which may or may not cause injury or can break at a bad time in a game.

safety first... once it cracks, it wont function the way its designed to. Spending another $100 to get it fixed (exagerated) to save you time doing rehab or getting injured.

Grafs are really meant to have graf holders on them. Once you mess around and put another brand holder on them, you will have a lifetime of problems with rivets coming loose. The loose rivets lead to cracked holders. So after you get them repaired, you MUST check the rivets after every skate. If you have a loose one, replace it right away.

does this apply to all brands of skates ?

For example, CCM skates with Bauer Tuuks.

I have a pair of CCM 1052 skates with Tuuks. I think one of the skates, the rivets kept on coming loose.

I like how adament 'davis' was about the "broken face" haha. It wasn't going to be an ankle sprain or anything, it was definitely going to result in a broken face.

lets put it this way. I'm sure you wait the whole week or spend time during the day waiting for hockey time to come around. When it does, you'd be pissed if you spend like 10 min to stretch and warm up, 15 to put on your gear, and then find out that you need to change your holders.

I had similar probs in the past, and check all my gear after each session. That way, if I need to change or replace anything, at least I have some time. (I've now got backups for almost everything, so there is little downtime)

I think it may depend on the stiffness of the outsole.

When I worked at a LHS in college, we would use copper rivets in any hole that was enlarged to fit an "off" brand holder on a boot. Not sure if this is a common practice but but it is just what we used to do.

As far as playing on a damaged holder, it is probably not the best way to go if you value you health.

texanhockey,

As for your "Super glued" holder, you may want to rethink trusting it as the chemicals in the super glue could have an adverse affect on the holder material.

Skates are all fixed! Brand new lightspeed2 power holders and he also drilled access holes in the foot bed so I can tighten the nut inside the holder. The rivet job looks much better this time.
