WIN XP Install

Recommended Posts

Since Search doesn't let you use 3 or 2 letter searches finding the other Win XP thread was kinda hard...

Anyway...I'm trying to install XP Pro on a machine and it gets part through the "Installing Windows" section (at the point where it says 39 minutes remaining) and I get this message:

An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Press OK to view the Setup log file.

When I click OK...it reboots...restarts the process and eventually bring sup the same error. Now, my CD Rom seems to be starting and stopping a LOT during the file copying process...could it be that it is the problem?

jesus it seems like im only replying to your threads haha.

You may want to try getting a windows xp cd or unplug all unnecessary components.

So just leave your cd rom and hard drive plugged in.

If it still doesnt work, either replace cd or try a new cd rom drive.

I'll try that this weekend...the 3 hours I spent messing with it tonight left me too annoyed to keep going.

I've used this disk before to install my current machines XP, so it strikes me as odd that it would be the problem.

It's a very bare bones machine right now....1 HD...1 CD Rom...no cards or anything in it...the LAN/Sound/Vid are all onboard...so running anymore bare bones really isn't possible.

Once I get the initial Windows installed...I'll transfer my second HD and DVD Drive from my current machine as well as my extra USB card and my double Monitor Video card. Hoping that disabling the OB works.

It sounds like a peripheral problem. I/O obviously stands for input/output. Another thought could be that it is a BIOS problem, but that is unlikely.

Make sure all your internal cables are secure. Also make sure your ram is properly seated.

Either it can't read a sector of the CD or it can't write to a sector of the hard drive.

just a thought that may have no validity but... is your xp pro a full install or upgrade?

It's a Full version that I've used in the past on a clean HD. I formatted this drive before I started.

Every time I've seen the problem it required a new HD or a new CD.

I've got a new CD to try...and I think I have a HD I can swap if it still doesn't work.

And...actually looking around the studio...I've got a 40 Gig HDsitting here...can't for the live of me figure out what computer it came out of or if it already has an full install on it. My repair MAY have just gotten easier.

[EDIT] New install disk worked fine. I'm up and running. Still don't know what is on this second 40G....fun times ahead.

Thanks guys.

40gigs eh? I think its NORP.

What's NORP?

I'm a few years behind the technology....I've got 2 x 40G drives.

It's not the greatest computer, but it's better than what I had.

Old:

P3 550 (384 Ram)

50 G (40+10)

CDR

New:

P3 1G (512 Ram)

80G (2x40)

DVD Drive + CDR

My only regret with this is that It doesn't have an AGP slot, so I can't transfer my Dual monitor card into it...so to compensate (and make myself feel better)...I think I'm going to get a Flat panel 19' WS instead.

For some reason I can't get the onboard NIC to work. It says there is no Network cable plugged in, but there is...the green light is on the NIC when the computer is off...but as soon as I boot it goes out and shows no connectivity. I guess I'll disable that OB and put a card in it tonight.

AGP is olllllllllddddddd

I realize that...I never said it was state-of-the-art...it's what I have to work with. I paid like $40 bucks for it a couple years ago. I was hoping to re-use it. I guess I can't.

Computers are like hockey gear...For every guy rocking brand new high end everything...there's a guy with a P3 or a Celeron or a P2 266 that is olllllllllddddddd.

Hell, I got a P3 550 at home that will be ready to use shortly. With 256 Ram and a 40G (running Win Me), and a CD Rom (No CD-R).

Anyone interested? :P

I can put a dual video card back in if it sweetens the deal.

Yeah...I never really game either. My computer couldn't run any games past NHL 2004 anyway...so I bought my Xbox.

N-R-O-P....*L* I was trying to make it into something "Not Really...??)

Actually, I think it might be a drive with a bad boot sector. I've tried it in 2 machines now...and it comes up as Primary Drive failure. The jumpers aren't marked though...so, I may just have them wrong. So I am trying different settings to see if I can get it to go. Never know...it might be NROP when all is said and done (not mine <_< ). I don't even remember where it came from.

A second computer is great if you have a home network - even if it is older adn slower...My buddy has his "good" computer in his office/studio upstairs and an old P2 in the basement/den. All his MP3's are on the good machine and a wireless network to the other one that runs into his stereo. Hours of music...no CD's or anything to change. Pretty much all that is on the downstairs one is Win Me and Media Player.

The HD with the bad sector you can try to zero it out by putting semi strong magnet around the hard drive. I've heard about this but never actually tried it myself. Have you considered this?

I haven't played around with the "dead" drive much. Honestly I'm thinking more seriously about the jumpers being wrong.

I do have a bulk eraser at work...so that is an option.

hey post how it goes in the end. I have an External Sata drive but for some reason I have a bad sector reading too. The jumper is set correctly so maybe I need to zero it out?

Whats a bulk eraser? A big ass magnet?

Yeah...for erasing cassettes and reel to reel tape. I wiped out 2 bank cards in college, because my wallet was on the desk next to it when I ran a tape over it.

It'll f' up your watch too if you aren't careful.

A low level format may work as well. You can access that from the BIOS.

I haven't had any luck...Partition Magic says there is a 40 G partition thre, but it won't see it when I boot. I've erased and tried to re-create the partition...I've formatted (both Fat32/NTFS)...but when I try to run from a boot disk...C: doesn't appear as the drive...

At this point I don't even know why I'm bothering. I have my machine working...now I've got a P3 550 in pieces with 320 Meg Ram in it and a CD Rom/HD I can't get to work. I keep getting Sec Master errors on the CD-ROM as well.

It's turning into a Man v. Machine thing...I just want it to work so I can say I won! *L*
