Slight pain when skating

Recommended Posts

I bought some NBH Vapor XXXX size 6D skates about 2 months ago. Before buying them I had the skates on for at least 15 minutes and I felt no pain whatsoever.

I had them heat-molded to break them in faster.

I played about 3-4 times during those 2 months (it's summer).. and I started feeling a slight discomfort while I was skating or just standing still. There's a spot on each of my feet that hurts while i'm skating and right after I take them off... the front of my feet is red and hurts a bit.

Since it only hurts in a certain area of both skates... should I have them punched?

absolutely... or get new skates. Living w/ the pain seems silly and it could lead to foot problems.

could it be because the skates aren't completely broken in since they are pretty stiff? I know my feet are not accustomed to stiff skates...

Could you try loosening up the front of the skates to see if that helps? I'm no expert, but I can change how my Vapors fit a bit my loosening or tightening the different parts. My feet are wide near the toes and narrow at the heel so I keep it a bit loose up front, tight in the middle, and loose up top.

what do you mean on the front... be more specific of where... that should help with suggestions.

Give it more time. Sure you've had the skates for 2 months but you've only skated in them 2-3 times. It took me 5-6 skates to break in my one90s. As for your foot pain leave the first few eyelets good and I am quite confident your pain will go away.

ps: throw some superfeet insoles in there!

Like i said, your skates aren't broken in yet. Loosen the first few eyelets and you will be fine.

If they're not broken in I'd suggest start wearing them around the house a bit. Lace them up when you're just watching TV or sitting at your computer. It'll help.

I definitely recommend loosening the laces. I have the XXXXs and they hurt my feet in the same area if I tight the laces too tight.

I lace my skates outside in until the top three eyelets. I undo those when I take off my skates... when I'm lacing them I lace those inside out. With that setup I can tighten the top while keeping the bottom loose(without waxed laces). It sounds stupid but it might help.

Just to make sure they were broken in properly I went and got them baked a 2nd time (it was free)... After a while... while the skates were pretty much cooled down I started feeling the pain again... I guess this isn't a good sign

maybe next time I go to my LHS I'll have them stretched / punched

I have the XXXX's and they started out hurting in the exact same place (like most of my skates start out), but they feel a lot better when I leave the laces loose up to the part of the foot when it starts to curve and then tighten normally. Hope that helps.

by the 10th ice time with these and they're still hurting then it's safe to say that they're not for you but again loosen the forefoot area up and see how they feel. Did you get superfeet insoles yet?

I did not buy Superfeet insoles yet.. I will soon

I'm going to try loosening the skates today, had to wait 24 hours to try them on because of the baking process

I tried it with superfeet insoles... and it was worst !!!

I'll try and get them punched to see if it changes anything

I just talked to a guy who has these skates. He bought them two months ago and his feet are still sore, he said the XXXX are just really stiff boot. He's going to bake them at least once more (today).

So if going by his advice, I'd say try baking them again.

hmmm it might be the case because I just put back the original insoles in them, and tried them on and it hurt.. but not has much has before

I baked them 2 times already, can I bake them more then 2 times?

You could probably bake once more...

I wouldn't count on them ever breaking in. I have circus clown wide front feet. My last pair of old school Tacks, over 10 years old and made of much more forgiving materials continued to hurt my feet in the exact same place. This in spite of the fact that the LHS kept telling me I just needed to skate through the pain and they would eventually break in.

I wound up using a single sided razor blade to cut out the non-memory foam in that area of the skate(cutting just below the eyelets). Gave me a little more room and a large decrease in my discomfort. But in ten years I never wound up pain free. With the stiff and exotic materials used in skates today if baking doesn't help I certainly wouldn't place my hopes on them ever being formed by my feet alone.
