nhl preseason games

Recommended Posts

So driving half an hour to joe louis arena to see the penguins play instead of Pittsburgh sounds good to me...but the ticket prices seem ridiculous for a preseason game ($49 for upper bowl seating on stubhub). I'm trying to decide if it's worth the price, based on whose going to show up. I've never really payed attention to how many of the big names play in the preseason games...what are the odds of seeing crosby, malkin, staal, etc in a preseason game in detroit?

If it's early in the preseason schedule, you might get 1 or 2 of the big guys playing. Later in the preseason when guys start getting sent down to the AHL/ECHL you'll get more and more of the NHL regulars playing

Hockey pre-season games are not like the NFL where there is seemingly 487 players per side.

They can still only dress 23 (in preseason I think it's 23). So the star players have to at least play some meaningful minutes. As JR says, you should get a good period, or maybe 2 before they reduce the ice time, and let the younger hopefuls play more, but you should still be entertained.

$49 for a pre-season is steep. The lower level here for the caps pre-season last year was only something like $29, maybe $35, and the eagles nest (upppppppper level) were only $5

They only have to dress a certain number of "regulars" , I want to say 8. Usually a home pre-season game is better than an away pre-season games, because the visiting team doesn't mind sitting out their stars when their fans aren't paying. You'll likely see one of Crosby or Malkin (who would likely be with Staal), but not both if it's early. You may luck out though. Also pre-season games are regular price at the ACC. $85 a ticket for my seats :(

The Blues stepped up and gave out vouchers for two free tickets to the Blues v. Thrashers preseason game to everyone who attended the development camp scrimmage game last month. I'm sure the seats will be packed for that one. The only question is: Will Kariya play at some point?

Pre-season is where you get in shape for Reg season...so I'd guess that, along with the rest of the responses thus far lead to a yes.

The Penguins almost never dress big guys on the road during the pre-season. A couple years ago they benched absolutely everyone and dressed four fourth lines. They have done that every time they have played in this area, despite the large number of Penguin jerseys in the stands.

If it's a home game or in Wilkes-Barre, where they own the AHL team, you will see most of the stars on the ice. If it's a road game, you will see most of the stars in suits. Assuming of course, they even make the trip.

I went to a Wild/Blues preseason game last season (in Minny). The only thing I can remember is that Kitchen played Legace for the first half of the game and Blues were winning. Then he put Sanford in and we got smoked.
