GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Bands started sucking around '91 when Nirvana and Pearl Jam taught everyone that being depressed and whining sold records.. now everyone has a problem with the world/politics/depression/angst/whatever... it's sad. Bands were better when they were actually having fun, and not being paid to whine.
dietzie27 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 its funny that you are comparing 2 different styles of music. of course GNR, metallica, maiden and slayer are gonna sound better than a pop punk band. but also except for skynard, all of the bands sold out, thats something else they have in common
Chadd 916 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 I miss bands that sang about partying and getting laid. You know, back when they were supposed to have fun.
mack 44 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 I would go with old music or older-style music because I'm sick of the emo/screamo bullshit that's way overplayed. Gay whiny crap like Story Of The Year just needs to go away and not be played to any mass amount of people.
jay 1 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 You might like Andrew W.K. Chadd... that's all he sings about. And Geki, Nirvana and Pearl Jam come from a long long road of depressed whining musicians. We can go back to the 80's and The Cure, the 70's and Pink Floyd, the 60's and Velvet Undergorund. And the old vs. new argument is kinda stale... styles change and tastes change but the great RECORDS are always timeless. Metallica, the stuff up to Justice, early Slayer, and much of Maidens catalog, I could go on and on but innovation is what makes bands stand out over time. The copycat bands will never make their mark.

hockey22 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 what is emo anyway? back befor Guns n' Roses got BIG, they would barely have enough money for a hotel when they were out on tour, so they all cramed into like a 1 bed room, they didn't play for the money, they played cause they loved music. mack, i agree. j86 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Nirvana only proved that you don't need to be good at playing guitar to be famous. Just like Blink -182, Good Charlotte, linkin park, New Found Glory, and etc. The thought of selling out is one of the stupidest things i've ever heard. If you're a dedicated musician and you want lots of people to hear your music you need to sign a major label record deal and go on MTV. The only good bands to come around in awhile are Jet, the Darkness, Incubus, the Strokes, Velvet Revolver, and Black label society for all the metal heads. 60's and 70's without a doubt had the best bands. You had led zeppelin, Ac DC, the who, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, and Pink Floyd. 80's only had two good band GnR and Metallica.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 I'm a big guitar fan and it's disappointing to see it simply become a rhythm instrument and not carry much in terms of the melody. It's due mostly to the corperate nature of the record industry that so many bands sound so similar. One band is successful so they sign as many similar sounding bands as they can. Smith 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 There are good new bands out there, there just harder to find because they are not played on the radio. Beacuse only a couple of Company's own all the radio stations anymore. The White strips, Buit to spill, Sonic Youth. Etc...... In the old days you has to be good to get radio play. Know you just have to fit A image.

This is true, but Nirvana and Pearl Jam were the ones that really popularized it, esentially killing the rock scene.
hockey22 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 i think record companys look at all the bands that wan't to get signed and they say, "well hopefully one of these will bring in the cash" and like chadd said they sign as many as they can hoping for the jackpot. now adays everything is about money its kinda sad. hockey22 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 radio stations play what is on MTV.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 It's more a matter of a band on a small or indie label getting popular and then the companies doing everything they can to find a band that sounds like them. Frequently they lack the talent and/or originality of the first band. Even the "underground" bands are still pushed on a limited number of media outlets and are the product of good marketing and promotion. I used to see 3-4 good new bands trying to get their stuff on the air every week and it just got tossed into the trash.
mack 44 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 My blanket statement is if it's good it won't be on an MTV network*

kosydar 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Nice to know theres a fellow BTS fan on here. I use to think that was true Mack, but then MTV started playing the shit out of Modest Mouse. Granted it isn't close to their best song, but it does restore my faith, a little.

Granted it isn't close to their best song, but it does restore my faith, a little. Shit, I'm a HUGE BTS fan. Saw them last fall and it was one of if the most amazing live shows I've ever seen. Doug Marsch is just a fabulous guitarist and song writer. They are without a doubt my favorite band to come out in the last 10 years or so and I'd say Keep it Like a Secret and Perfect From Now On easily fall into the timeless category. I just wish they'd release a new record.

kosydar 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 I really like Theres Nothing Wrong With Love. I've had it for like four years and I still like it as much as the first day I had it. They do need to release some new material. Have you heard Marsch's solo CD?
jay 1 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Yeah, I've got the solo CD. I don't like it anywhere near as much as his BTS stuff but it's still pretty good.
Shorthanded67 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Yeah Nirvana definitely proved that having the ability to barely play 2 chords will go a long way. The grunge scene pretty much killed off the 80's hair bands. Yeah some of the 80's hair bands were awful but many talented musicians (mostly guitarists) came out of them. The bottom line was that the songs were fun with most of them being about sex and/or chicks. The heavy metal bands of the time (Metaliica, Maiden, Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax) may have written about social issues in most of their songs, but they didn't bitch about them like today's bands do. They let the listener decide their stance on the issue.I hate the newer music scene. The lyrics are so whiny and depressed. Not to mention many of the bands sound a dime a dozen.Bring me back to a time when the hair was big..... :P
mack 44 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Kosy-Yeah MTV/VH1 will pull a nugget out and play good songs (and eventually run them into the ground) but that's why I put the asterisk in there. But if you have a decent radio station around you, you'll probably be tired of a good song before MTV gets its claws into it.I don't check in their channels but I'm hoping they don't start playing/buring Snow Patrol, the Killers or the Walkmen.
