suggestion for equipment repair/modification

I have a velcro cinch strap on my elbow pad that keeps coming undone, either because the hook (rough) side is worn down and won't stick to the loop (soft) side or because it snags on the inside of my jersey sleeve. I'm looking for a simple solution to this, and I'm looking for something more reusable than just tape.

I've tried using a mini binder clip (like from the office supply store) to hold the strap together, but the angular metal is uncomfortable.

I'm considering holding the strap together with velcro cable ties (like from Radio Shack).

Do you guys have any other solutions?

Thanks

You could try and replace the velcro straps. Another option is to add some metal poppers like the ones used on chin straps. You should be able to pick them us from most hardware stores. Hope this helps

Trim the soft side of the velcro with scissors, that will give you some grabbiness back. Another short term fix is to use sock tape over it everytime you skate. Long term fix: cut off the exisiting velcro pieces with a seam ripper, use some glue to glue down a new piece of velcro, allow the glue to set and then sew it to make it permanent.

I had the exact same problem. Buddy of mine's father has a shoe repair business and he replaced the Velcro for me. Works perfect now and only costs a few bucks.

These are great ideas so far. However, I forgot to mention one detail that's sort of specific to my case. That is, even before my velcro started wearing down, when it was brand new it still wasn't even fastening that well in the first place. It's always been sort of like when you have an adhesive sticker and one corner of it loses stickiness and it curls up, which then compromises the whole thing (makes sense?).

That means that even if I restore the velcro to its original condition, it may still not hold well enough for me. Basically, I'd like to make it an even stronger hold than before since the factory design is sort of deficient.

one thing i did, was buy a kid size shinguard strap

and place it over the bad strap.

and place the other shiguard strap right over the elbow, where it bends.

velcro on the outside, so it doesnt chafe you every time you bend your arm.

it worked for me

one other suggestion

have the shoe repair guy just sew the velcro right on to the elbow pad, where you need.. and just slide your elbow in and out...
