Extra Padding for Hip Flexor/Joint Area

Recommended Posts

I've tried three different pairs of pants over the past year and am pretty happy with the Jofa's that I have right now. But, I still have problems with protection on the side of my hips where there is still insufficient padding. Is there anything I can wear under my pants to keep my hips? Overall the pants are very protective and better than others, but I still have the hip problem occassionally.

Try some Tackla Airs. I switched to those after injuring my hip earlier last year and I have had no problems since.

EDIT: Although, I know you asked for padding, but I don't think there's anything you can do to help other than changing your pants altogether.

I've injured my hip twice - enough that my doctor has guaranteed me that I'll need a hip replacement in my future years. Since then, I've been wearing pro-pants. They're a bit bulkier than most retail pants, but every time I have an accident and can get up on my own, I'm grateful for having them.

You might also want to check out Tackla 5000X / 5000Pro (same pants different names). I've heard a lot of good things about them.

Finally, I'm a firm believer that when it comes to protective equipment, you get what you pay (generally speaking). Cheap pants = less padding and foam.

Good luck!

Another option, along with these other good suggestions, would be to find a pair of padded compression shorts. I got a pair of McDavid's with hip, thigh, and tail pads. WSI makes a good pair, Attack Shorts I believe they're called. Pretty cheap, and they'll stay in place to make sure at least Something is over your hips, where the pants MIGHT shift from time to time. Just a thought.

I'll probably end up doing that for the time being Wex, but I'd like to save some money for something like the 9k or tacklas, which sounds like what I need. The jofa 5000s are very protective, but there is still the shifting and that small gap where there is little protection. Its better than the other pants I've tried, which means the bruises are less frequent and no longer right on the hip/pelvic joint (those were horrible).

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread, but I'm interested in knowing whether anyone has experience with the Farrell 5 Pad compression shorts seen here: Farrell Compression Shorts

I know the shoulder pads have been gaining momentum, but I'm wondering if the shorts have enough padding to make a noticeable difference, particularly on the side / back of the hip. How do these compare with the Shock Doctor and McDavid compression shorts out there?

I'm currently wearing the CCM 501 pro pants and have been happy with the protection in the tailbone, on the sides of the hip and on the thigh. But I've had a few nasty falls and checks where I seem to have landed on my hip/ass in between the side hip pads and the tailbone protection.

That would be news to the dealers I know that sell them.
