problem with my helmet sliding down

Recommended Posts

I use a CCM 1052 Tacks helmet, which I thought fit pretty well since it was comfortable, but the other day, I sort of got hit in the head in a way where my helmet slid downward/forward and my cage struck me in the throat.

I believe the Mission Intake has some sort of head plate that clamps on the back of the skull or something, I've played with an RBK 8K that felt like it was more secure in that area as well, and I've read here on MSH that the 1092 version of the helmet was improved in the back-of-the-head aspect compared to the 1052.

For those who have used these helmets, is this a problem? Any other helmet suggestions?

I've already tried tightening the helmet and that doesn't really improve the situation.

Shouldn't your cage have a chin-cup that hits your chin? Helmets don't clamp to your head, they fit snugly and the chin-strap and chin help keep it in place.

Maybe the size of cage you have is too large.

I actually wanted to know how good the 1092 was. For Canadian residents, both Sportchek and Sportmart have them on sale for 59.99 Canadian. Also, the RBK 4k is on sale at Canadian Tire for just under 70 bucks, regular 89.99 and 99.99 at Sportchek.

I have my sights set on the Intake, the Vector, 6k and 4500. I don't know whether to spend more, or to go with the CCM. I heard some people like it, some don't. I hate the looks, but that's not what's important. Too bad none of those are on sale.

Maybe "clamp" isn't the word I'm looking for. What I mean is that the Intake (which I haven't worn) has this feature called Mission Head Lock (MHL). You can look it up or just read more about it here:

My current cage is comfortable and the next smaller size is way too small. I'm using a Jofa/CCM 480, where the chin cup is attached to the cage itself, not to any sort of chin strap. When I'm playing, my chin sits comfortably in the cup, but this time when I got hit, my chin slid out an over it.

Sounds like the hit knocked it a bit out of wack. Other than replacing (check for damage closely), maybe superglue in some extra padding in the back if space allows above the nape of the neck to possibly add some grip?

It seems to fit perfectly fine, except that it shifts in only that one direction. Any tighter and it feels uncomfortable and even then it doesn't do anything to restrict the sliding.

The hit itself wasn't particularly bad enough that I thought there was any damage to the helmet. I'm short guy and a low skater and I was chasing down a loose puck in open ice along with another guy in a non-check game when we had moderately light contact (not hard enough to knock me off my feet).
