Lost my Appendix!

Recommended Posts

I ended up waking up at 3 am last night with major abdominal pain, and went to the ER, only to find out my Appendix was very swollen, and it needed to be removed immediately. I literaterly had it out one hour ago, and they told me 2 weeks before i can really move around again.

When i mentioned hockey, they told me that they really discouraged me playing for a long time, up to 4 months. I don't know what i'm going to do for the next 4 months :(

Anyone ever had their Appendix removed? How long did it take for you to recover?

They tell me that i'll be discharged by tomorrow, but no work for one week, and no sports/heavy lifting for about 4-6 weeks.

They also said it's important for me to move around, and not just lay in bed for as long as i can. Apparently this speeds up the healing process.

Appreciate the input guys, thanks again!

I blame everything on JR. :D

I had my appendix removed in July 1981; July 1st to be exact. Was out of the hospital on the 3rd. Rode a "Century" on the 5th.

Very nice.....a fellow cyclist/hockey player. :)

Get well soon. At least you got rid of it. Heard of some people who had this pain for weeks and finally went to a doctor verrrry late.

I actually had this pain about 3 weeks ago. I went to my doctor and he told me i was too backed up.

If i only knew it was my appendix interfering with my intestines.

JR said month and a half, and the doctor told me 4 as i left the hospital today. I seriously think i'm going to have to go buy NHL2K8 and NHL08 now, lol.

The reason why it took so long was because of the twisting of the torso. I have a 2.5" incision. Dunno if they cut you or used the newer type where they poke holes.

Mine sucked because I was in LI at the time and was set to take a flight to Miami that day. I had the surgery 3 hrs before I was set to take off. They wouldn't allow me to travel either, I had to stay in NY for an additional week and a half.

But, don't put yourself in the game...you're on IR. Doctors orders.

That's rough, i got the kind of surgery where they poked three holes, and also did something else i wont mention. no scars, they went through the belly button.

As for RadioGAGA, i'll be in the minors while JR's free agent is dominating in the NHL. Top scorer anyone?

It sounds like you had a laparoscopic appendectomy performed. It would be irresponsible to give you advice regarding how long you should wait before playing sports, but you should talk to your doctor again.

Laparoscopic surgeries have much faster healing times than their more invasive counterparts, and depending on your situation and your doctor's advice you may be told you can play sooner then originally believed.

I had mine out when I was 14. The doctor told me 2 weeks out of hockey, I was back on the ice 2 days after the surgery, and I was fine. It was during training camp, so there wasnt much contact. Nothing ever happened, but I would listen to what the doctor says... even though I didnt.
