Damage to shaft due to constant blade change?

Recommended Posts

I just got a new Dolomite shaft and two of the same Smyth blades. I play both roller and ice hockey, and I like keeping my equipment consistant (same skates boot/pitch, same stick/curve) to minimize the differences between the two sports. So my question is, will it be damaging to the shaft if I constantly switch out the blades? I uses lots of tape and wax for ice, and only unwaxed horizontal strips on the blade face for roller. I would prefer not having to re-tape twice a week.

I will probably buy another Dolo shaft in a couple weeks, after I get my check.

Well, I'm no expert, but I will have to disagree to an extent with Mack.

Heat, in general, is detrimental to the shaft. Even if done right switching out blades multiple times per week can't be good for it. Composites, especially carbonfibre, is formed with extreme heat and resins and eventually heating it up that many times can't be good for it.

Of course, if you're just talking about doing it over a short period you should be OK.

As long as he's not cooking the end and/or using a flame I think he'll be okay. I remember a phase where I'd be changing a blade a night and never had anything come out of it. Then again this was back when shafts were well-made.

heating it on a regular basis will probably effect the stick somehow but chances are you won't notice... sticks aren't built to last forever and you can't prove whether your stick broke because you repeatedly heated it or it was from a slash or skate or what-have-you.
