big ben

Good deal?

Recommended Posts

Was just at the LHS and I tried on some Mission S300s from last year and they fit me really well, felt good, etc. They quoted me $151 out the door with baking, sharpening, tax, etc. since they are last years model.

This a good deal or should I go for the Fuel 90AGs which would be about $230 out the door with baking, etc.

Keep in mind I'm coming from some crappy bauer 2090s, I'm 215 lbs, 6'.

If your a big guy you may need something a bit more durable than the S300. They have "supple fit" concept which for a comfy and softer fit. I really like my S500 but only weigh in the 180s and have torn the tendon guards on both of my skates.

ag90 be better?

I tried on some ccm 892s also but they didn't fit my foot as well, I've always worn bauers but I don't like how they put me back on my heels.

300s are more traditional than the 400 or 500. Supplefit is not about a "comfy fit" it about getting the skate and the support closer to the foot and allowing for more ankle flex and an elongated stride.

ag90 be better?

Ag is the replacement for the S series, still based on supplefit concepts.

So these won't prematurely break down or anything, I'm not exactly hard on skates.

I mean for the price, I guess I can't go wrong

As mentioned above, the S300 are supplefit, so they aren't stiff like other mid-range boots (Easton Synergy 900, NBH Supreme 50 etc.). I know you complained about a lack of stiffness in your other boots, so they might not be for you.

Also, did you get sized by a reputable dealer? I'm not trying to second guess anyone, but size 13 seems huge, considering I'm 6'3" and I wear (NBH) 9.5s. I know everyone is different, but when I bought my first skates (before I found MSH) I got size 13's and they were HUGE on me. If you need fitting guidelines, don't be afraid to ask.

Well I tried on several, the ccms i was a 11D and the s300's an 13E, I had boxes all around me, putting two different ones on at a time, tightening and comparing. The missions just felt so much better compared to the others, but I don't wanna be a gear whore and have to keep shopping around. I want something I can use for at least 2 years. I just don't want to buy the s300's if they are a beginner skate or something, been there, have that, want to advance.

Well, the S-series might've still have been running to shoe size, so it'd be in the realm of possibility. And chances are, the S300 will feel more comfortable, thanks to its soft-boot construction.

But, I would really recommend trying on as many skates as possible before buying. There's nothing wrong with being a gear-whore :) There are a number of skates that are friendly to large feet, including Graf 709s, Bauer Supremes and RBKs. It never hurts to have TOO many skates to choose from.

S series do not fit to shoe size. They're generally a full size down, some people are a half size down.

The two size gap from CCMs to Missions is very odd. It's usually a half size and sometimes a full size. I've never seen a two size difference that was properly sized.

at one point i had a 692 11d on and 892 11.5E and the 892 had too much room for me, but then i put on the mission with the 892 and it felt better, i dunno

I'm gonna go back again and try them again, they didn't have every skate in every size of course. I'll be in Dallas this weekend and will be able to try alot more on at the shops there hopefully.

Ok back from the LHS, as you guys guessed, he sized me wrong, i'm a 12E in Missions, but after hearing that these break in 1/4 more I think I'm going to go for a 12D.

Also with my current skates, another thing that concerns me, is the fact I feel like the left skate is messed up somehow, because no matter what I do, when I lace it, the boot laces up my foot crooked. Hard to explain, I can get a pic, but the right skate laces fine, perfect spacing in between, straight up the boot, but the left doesn't. Also you can see a "stress" mark on the left boot because it feels like I'm skating with my left skate bending down to much and its hard to pull the left skate forward to stop.

Now that I know my size, I'm debating whether to pick up the S400s or the Fuel 90AGs, both are the same price baked, sharpened, etc.

Do I want newer technology or older?

I must say I've worn skates off and on my whole life but nothing felt as good as the missions.

I'd probably go S400 as from what I hear from the guys around here they prefer the older Mission stuff. My buddy loves his L7's and you can't go wrong with Pitch 3.
