I've had positive, but limited, exposure to their stuff. I'm pretty sure it's the same for most others....it'd be a bigger hit if their stuff was more widely available.

yesyes, i know the brand doesnt have huge exposure out there. not many NHL'ers use 'em ect. Just brought this up for anyone who wants to try something 'new'. They have made a huge boost on sales this side, after they introduced the nano-tech ops

Should have my new stick show up at the LHS in about a week. I loved the 8500 enough to order the 9500. Their top-end jazz is too rich for me.

Their "standard" curve is just about as flat as you can get, and in a 6 lie.

i just found out they made something other than goalie sticks. their gloves and pants would be great if a team would spring up in north america that had acid yellow, hot pink, and icey blue colours to match with.

but seriously, neat stuff

If a store has Tackla, they either have or can get Montreal products.

Always curious why the name Montreal for a Finland based company, I used to assume they were from Montreal.

Well they might originally been until Teppo and his bros bought them? I'm not sure...

And Rustpot, which LHS is the 9500 coming in at? Perani's I'm guessing? Seems like the only place I can find any Montreal stuff online.

@ montrealhockey.com MONTREAL SPORTS OY

Montreal has produced and marketed ice hockey sticks since 1960. Kalevi ”Kallu” Numminen – the father of the current owners, Numminen brothers and sister, was one of the company´s founders.

Montreal is known especially for its sticks and has been one of the leading companies to introduce new innovations. 1960 Montreal introduced its first stick made of birch and compact aspen laminates, while the blades were straight and made of birch.

1962 Montreal began reinforcing blades with fiberglass strips and the durability of the sticks increased drasticly.

Curved blades 1965 revolutionized the nature of the game.

The second revolution was the fiberglass reinforced shafts 1973, which with carbon strips 1980 made the shaft remarkably stronger.

1996 Montreal introduced the composite shafts and the full composite stick,MONTREAL, 8500 NITRO was ready for the market 2002 – the third stick revolution was true.

founded in tampere, finland. no idea why name it montreal tho

Not coming in, had to special order it. I have no clue how it compares to the 8500, and from what their current catalog says the 9500 and 4500 aren't offered and the Standard is gone. I might even end up sending it back, all depends on how different it is. I'm hoping the blade is a bit better finish, though I can't complain about stiffness, I don't like the uncovered weave- it leads to chipping too easily.

My LHS (Center Ice Skate and Sport in Houghton, MI) had a dealer catalog that differed greatly from the online catalog, though the owner only showed me a small portion, probably keeping pricing an such from prying eyes.

Come to think of it, he only told me he ordered me a stick, not that it was the 9500. I was explicit on wanting the Standard curve, which the Numminen was shown as being damn close to in his catalog and nowhere close online. Maybe a Nitro Lite is showing up, who knows.

That is exactly why they chose the name, instant credibility.

That "nick" curve is interesting, anyone know the lie?

Montreal's products are quite good from my experience with them. In fact I've tried their recent stick and liked it, however the breakage on it was unbelievable.

If they were ever bought out by someone their product could become something worthwhile, but until then they're far too small in a major market in NA.

Some come in multiple lies. The dealer catalog has them listed, even for the ones that only come in a single lie.

Well let us know what happens...I'm interested. I loved my 8500 and was tempted to pick up what I could from the exchange forum here.

Stopped by the LHS and my 9500 was there. For how long I don't know, the owner is starting to piss me off more and more. Maybe I was getting a call later today, I shouldn't be miffed at that I guess.

He handed it to me and I instantly frowned. The shaft is odd feeling, not a glazed clear, and nowhere near the smooth sand of the 8500. It felt more like a laminated woodie without the ridges of the grain than any of the competitor's sticks I've ever felt. The top color is a clear coat with what seems like a black undercolor (the CF maybe), and you can see the way it's constructed on the backside kinda. Where the 8500 goes black in the taper and blade, the 9500 is bone white. I'd have to paint it since I would never be able to see it and get a good depth perception for it on the ice.

Worst part; the stickers were peeling. That's right, it uses stickers for graphics and they were peeling on the brand new stick.

Not to mention the curve (Numminen) is a tad deeper and more open at the toe than what I wanted (Standard). I told him specifically to find out if the Num. was the replacement and to not order it if it wasn't. Either he was told wrong or didn't care and thought the picture was close enough.

I asked him if he'd be mad if I said I didn't want it. He says to me "yes, if I had known you didn't want it I never would have ordered it in the first place." Well no shit. I thought I was going to get something remotely close to the 8500 and all he can say is "well it's a different stick, what did you expect?" to which I reply "to not have a $110 stick with peeling stickers and a curve I didn't want"

So long story short, I put it on my credit card. I didn't want to, but I had a feeling he thought I was going to try and stick him with it. If he can return it, I agreed to pay for shipping back the wherever Montreal's US distributer is (New Hampshire?) since it's my choice not to buy what I asked to be ordered for me. If not, he'll keep it in the store to sell on consignment and I'll list it here to see if someone wants it.

$100 plus shipping anyone?

So they pushed you into buying a stick that they ordered, even though you didn't even know which one they ordered?

They should have at least checked with you before they placed the order.

Are you sure you haven't edited that story alittle bit? No LHS around here would ever order a single stick for a person without beeing 100% sure that the person was buying it.

So either that LHS owner is a jackass, or you got cold feet.

I got cold feet.

Original conversation:

me- "Hey, I have this 8500 and I really love the curve, I'd like another"

owner-"Ok, well, looking at the catalog the only thing in a standard curve are their $15 wood blades. I can call and see if I can get a stick in it though, they might have other options not listed"

"Ok, and looking at this catalog it seems the numminen is almost exactly the same. They don't list specs except for lie though. When you call could you ask how close the numminen is? If it's the same thing just with the player's name on it, that's fine"

"Ok, well I can get the top end Nitro for around $200 or there's a 9500 for around $100-110 or the 4500 for a bit less"

"So call and see about a standard 9500 and if num. is the same, one of those, 200 flex"

A month passes. I go in to get my skates sharpened and take a gander at the S17, SC6, 9kO, Vapor XXXX sticks they just got in my buddy told me about. As I go to pay after the sharpening..

"Oh, your stick is here by the way"

"Really?" he hands it to me "This is nothing like what I wanted. The curve is different, the sticker here is peeling and the shaft is a completely different style." another minute of looking the stick over "Would you be mad if I said I didn't want this?"

"Yes, or else I would have never ordered it in the first place. What were you expecting? It's not the same stick"

"Oh, I know, I just didn't really think they'd go from a painted light sand to an odd-feeling smooth shaft with stickers. And the curve I wanted it more straight with a closed face"

"Well I don't know what to tell you. It should be fine"

"No, I don't think I want it at all, it nothing like what I was expecting. If it was close it wouldn't be an issue. Can you send it back?"

"I don't know, I can call later today and ask"

"I'll pay return shipping and restocking as long as the total's less than say $30, other wise I'll try to sell it or sit on it. If they won't take it back will you keep it in the store and sell it on consignment?"

Notice I never mention anything like "No, this isn't good, I'm not paying for this, take care of it."

"I guess we can do that. Why don't you pay for it with your credit card and I can refund the difference"

At this point I'm thinking "Why would I pay for it now, it starts the warranty and I'm not taking it from the store" but I figure he wants to cover his ass in case I never show up again. Even though he knows me by name and I'm in the store a few times a month. Whatever. He either didn't put in the effort or we got mixed up somewhere.

Either way, a sour experience for both of us. I would expect that when I tell him I'm unhappy that the sticker is peeling off and that the curve isn't the one I was adamant about wanting he would do something more than tell me I can deal with it.

It's not like he's busy as a bee all day long. For the half hour I was there, there was one other guy looking for a Team Canada hat.

I went in wanting an 8500 with a Standard curve or something close. A month later he hands me a 9500 that is radically different in many ways, and with a curve I don't particularly like. Would you walk out with it?
