Ohlund Suspension

Recommended Posts

Koivu came up high but its not like he took a long run at him, Ohlund totally disappoints me..anyone who slashes like that is just weak..got a problem..take off the gloves...its that simple...this whole generation of people who use their sticks and/or hits from behind while playing on the perimiter will do more to set the game back than any jersey, logo branding, lack of TV contract, etc..the teams who win the Cup for the most part will continue to mirror the Ducks, Canes etc and not a squad like Vancouver..

4 games for a broken leg...crazy

Maybe if the instigator rule wasn't around then he would've dropped the gloves. It's something to consider.

Had he reacted right away with dropping the mitts then the instigator penalty probably wouldn't have been called. Heat of the moment scrap and all.

Look almost all of us grew up in a league where fighting gets you tossed, right up until a very few of MSH'ers reached Major Jr or minor pro...but I was always taught and have coached to the point where if its deserving..drop the gloves...the team will deal with the punishment...no effin way Ohlund even thought "well i'll get an extra 2 so I'll just break his leg"..

in the denver post today there's a photo of Avery getting absolutely crushed in the face by an elbow...i don't recall him breaking anyone's leg..

I'm amazed that anyone is blaming this at Koivu...he took 2 steps..sure he came up high..happens 10x/game..slashing someone across the back of the legs with intent is just pure chickensh*t...this is exactly where that rule where you are out as long as the person is injured would be great to have...

wasn't ohlund the one who nearly lost an eye with reckless stickwork?

You seem to forget that kids in North America grew up watching a league where fighting just gets you 5 minutes. Euro leagues you get tossed, not just minor hockey, pro and junior leagues, as well. It is ingrained that fighting is a big no-no.

you are right..here in N.America we just run around kicking people's ass because we see it on TV...I watch 8 yr olds slug it out because its what their favorite players do when they watch them...

Yeah, because that was exactly my point.

Anyone else having a flashback to the interview scene with Dave "Killer" from slapshot?

Alot of European's get NHL games and alot of North American Kids see World Junior, World Championship and other International tournaments as well, where fighting isn't condoned.

I'm sorry you must have missed the big sarcasm button in the right hand corner I would have responded earlier but I watched family guy and went out and made a slew of racial comments while shooting people

Players leave their feet to elbow someone in the head 10x a game, I don't think so. What Ohlund did was gutless, but so was what Koivu did. What Koivu did could injure someone seriously. Part of the problem with the NHL is that they wait until someone is seriously injured before they do anything. Ohlund deserved to be suspended and I think he should have got a much longer suspension, but Koivu was hardly an innocent victim.

Leaving the feet was probably the wrong term..but people coming up high like Koivu did happens all the time in an NHL game...leading with elbows,etc...he stretched for the puck, came back upright and 1-2 steps later was leading with an elbow...it wasn't a15-20 ft lead in at full speed...agree that Koivu isn't totally innocent..very few are in the NHL..the NHL needs to worry less about diving and getting both sort of acts (those to head and just idiot actions) out of the game...
