Hardest Steel

Recommended Posts

Has anyone actual tested the various steel on the market to determine who has the best/hardest steel? It would be nice to have some empirical data.

Remember the black Bauer steel with the triangles?

I loved the black Bauer steel with the triangles on my vapor 10's. I'm actually about to buy another pair of 10's as well as RBK 5k's since I am unhappy with my 10.0's. But I would go with that steel on the 10's as my favorite.

Mission and RBK goal steel are definately the hardest, evidenced by the additional passes that have to be done to sharpen them. One look at the bare minimum sparks coming off the wheel is a dead giveaway of a hardened steel. The black painted Tuuks with the diamonds were absolutely great. Too bad bauer strayed from that formula (Although I do like to make mucho $$$$ replacing broken Bauer steel). Today alone did 3 pairs. :)

Anyway, empirical data will prob be hard to get. Any busy skate sharpening shop should be able to give you good feedback on what steel is the best, for edge retention and strength.

Mission steel is by far the hardest ive skated on, the LS2 steel is oretty hard too though i find

LS2 is hard, but certainly not the best. Too hard, it can snap like a potato chip, taking a pass, jumping over the boards, whatever. I rank it last for the "best" category. It is hard and holds an edge well...until it breaks.

Heh. I second that. I snapped the blade on my flexlites last week blocking a pretty weak shot...

yeah the LS2 steel tends to be quite brittle at times, but ive had some pretty good luck with it, ive only had one runner break on me and ive been using LS2s for about 4 years

The Mission steel on the Pitch 3 holder is definitely one of the hardest and toughest on the market. Had a pair of Missions and toke some pretty hard shots off of them a few times and it was no problem, they held up fine. The guy at the pro shop hates sharpening them though, he says they take him a lot more extra passes with the wheel to get them sharp again compared to most other brands.
