helmet data

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a replacement for my carbsters. After a few years, I know the foam changes, it's protective properties degrade as the foams outgas (dry out). I'm not concerned with the looks as from my perspective they are look the very similar ...and who cares what it looks like, it's a helmet!.

Is there any data (other than biased manufacturer verbiage) this indicates most "protective" helmet? I have been lurking around for while and searched for data ...nothing really evident. Perhaps some new info not posted yet?

thanks

Not really, it's a lot of he said she said. But having a carbster myself, I'd be willing to bet that you'd hate a EPP helmet simply because of the comfort and sweat dripping into your eyes.

I've been beating that drum for several years now. Everyone claims to be the most protective but nobody will publish hard numbers.

Contact HECC. They run the tests. Maybe they will give you the data you seek.

The fit of a helmet is similar to the fit of a skate. The helmet that may be the most protective(subjectively speaking)may not fit your head properly. This is similar to the best skate(subjectively speaking) may not fit your foot all that well. Therefore, given the testing standards done by HECC and each vendor to meet base criteria of safety and beyond, the high end helmet that fits your head the best is likely to offer you the best level of protection.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has also conducted helmet tests, I believe this is the test that Cascade did not send their helmet to.

Yeah, I've been the forerunner of VN helmet since I joined this site. I tried to give EPP another chance in buying your 8K bucket but I can honestly say that I hate EPP much more after wearing it.

I've heard a certain select member hint at the fact that EPP is cheaper to make and that almost implies that they are pushing the protective properties to make a larger margin of profit.

Not been here long TBL but ive definately noticed u hate EPP, as u mention it in every helmet thread. nothing quite beats a good passionate hatred of something lol. Quick Clarification tho, EPP and VN are the foam like material inside the shell, with VN being the more oldskool spongier swimming pool float looking stuff in the older CCM lids and EPP being the harder black stuff in the 8K which then has the comfort foam on top?

Thanks for the comments. I contacted HECC and as I expected from a standards association, the only data is if it passes, nothing additional, not even helpfull suggestions .. other than replace at 5yrs old. And to think I'd still be in the Makita / Northland if the foam had not turned to dust.

I tried the collage listed, but could only leave a message to the big cheese in the concussion department. I'd be pleasantly surprized if I get a return call.

I'll update if I get anymore relevant info.

thanks.
