do i heat mold or stretch a new skate out?

Recommended Posts

like a lot of you guys, one of my feet (my left) is longer than the other (half a size in my case). i just recently bought a new pair of graf 703's online and much to my chagrin, my left foot has a major pressure point on the inner forefoot right where the toecap ends. I know that breaking in a skate will result in your foot receding further back into the heel pocket so my question is this: will heat molding solve my problem or will i need something as serious as punching or stretching? I chose stretching as an option because my right foot fits perfectly fine length-wise and has no pinching in the location where my left foot has it. Therefore, I made the leap of logic that my left foot would be comfortable as my right if it were moved back further into the boot. Tell me what you think, guys!

You definitely want to use stretching or punching as a last resort. Bake the skates once, if that doesnt work try baking again. Then consider punching them out.

No problem, best of luck.

btw, I should add that the reason that you want to wait on punching or stretching is because that can't be undone.

If your right fits fine as it is, without baking, might I suggest just baking the left?

Heat mold both though because it just helps the skate adjust better to both feet. It doesn't stretch the boot or anything like what punching does.

I know that breaking in a skate will result in your foot receding further back into the heel pocket so my question is this:

I didn't realize this. My son is starting to develop a callous on his R heel. Skates are about a year old, 5Ks. I was going to look into getting them punched. Would this be the way to go?

hm, from what I've learned, you can't punch out certain areas of the skate, namely the toecap, the edges, and the heel because that's where the counter is.

so i skated in a game of pick-up last night and my left foot was screaming in pain mainly because it feels like the skate is too narrow. Suprisingly, the pressure point caused by my longer left foot crashing into the edge of the toe cap doesn't bother me too much. I guess i'm going to take them in for another heat molding to see if the pressure point on the outer side of my left foot will go away.

I have another question though. I talked to one of the techs at a local hockey shop and he said that skates can't be lengthened. Isn't that incorrect? I've read somewhere that you can powerstretch a skate and in some cases, up another size. Does anyone know a shop in Vancouver, BC that can do such a process?

Ok not to thread jack, but I have a similar problem. I am currently skating in pair of Graf 301's. I have been experiencing some pressure in my left arch for sometime now I figured I just needed to break them in more, but no such luck with that. Should I bake them a second time, get some super feet or some other insole type product, or look into getting them punched out?

apparently, after going to 3 different skate shops including the ice level sports, stretching is NOT a viable option. looks like i'm screwed.
