Some new pads?

Recommended Posts

So I'm about due for some new elbow/shin and maybe shoulder pads. I have been wearing bauer 6000 elbow/shin for the last two to three years but they are starting to show wear (i.e. sticthing coming out, plastic wear toward bottom etc.) I'm still a few months away from my purchase so right now I'm just trying to collect some info. I have never had any issue with my Bauers and figure that I would stick with what I know and just get another Bauer.

I play four to five times a week and play defense a few night and offense some others. I block alot of shots and tend to play infront of the oppenents net when playing offense so I take a lot of pucks down low. I have never taken a hit or fell to my knees and experienced any pain.

I am considering just getting the Bauer equivalent of what I have now. Would that be the Supreme 70 pads? Would a One90 be overkill? How do these hold up? Any complaints?

I would just go and take a look at my LHS but they do not carry Bauer anymore. I did see a pair of Rbk 6k that i liked but I haven't had any experience with them. Are these comparable to what I have?

My budget is unlimited but there is no need to break the bank.

So any suggestions? What do you use?

Before my college cut the hockey team I was playing 4-6 times a week. I wear supreme 30 shins. I always felt shins were just plastic and if I can move in them what is the point of breaking the bank? If they crack I will just get another cheep pair. I never saw a difference in ones that coast $50 and ones that coast $100. I also play defense and forward and have taken many pucks off the shins and never had any pain or cracking.

Im going to have to strongly disagree with strosedefence34 when he says shin pads are just plastic. Shin pads are the ONE piece of padding that I would not skimp on. Not only do they protect from shots, they also absorb any impact from falls on the knees. Higher end shins have much better padding in the knee area and also make a better effort at keeping the knee in the right position on the pad. Take it from me (im 21) that had I had better fitting and higher quality pads in my earlier years of playing, my knees would be a lot less arthritic. But hey, thats just my take on it.

Strongly recommend the Supreme 70 elbows, but saty away from the Supreme 70 shins. I have had my shins since September, and the knee is all cracked up. Here is a picture

Also is there anything i can do about this? like i said i have only had these for 3 months, is there some kind of warrenty or anything? Should i call Nike Bauer?

Thanks

Well I am a big supporter of Jofa AKA RBK protective equipment. For fit and comfort it's the best I have ever worn. I own the Jofa 8800 shoulders now know as the RBK 9K's. Jofa 9044 elbows now know as the RBK 9K's I just bought the RBK 6K shins. Unfortunatly I can't give you a reveiw of them because they are a Christmas from my wife and haven't gotten them yet. My son as well use's all Jofa protective equipment. He has the 9044 shin's which are the mirror image of the 6k's and I have tried his which made me go for the RBK 6K's. I believe whichever RBK route you go you will be happy. I don't know what your budget is but, I am sure you can get what you need. Stay at the 5K and above. If buying online http://www.kempshockey.com/and http://www.hockey2.com are having 15% off any order going on right now. Good Luck

Ive had my Supreme 70 shins since the summer and theyre holding up fine. I have also taken many shots off of them and been tripped a couple of times and so far so good.

I have a little topic on the side...I've recently fractured 3 rib bones from falling and landing on my elbow pad (against my ribs). I am still using my 7-8 years old shin/shoulder/pants...Just wondering if newer shoulders will have better protections in the rib area OR are my pants sitting too low and not covering the rib area...also, are newer elbow pads as hard as the old ones? I am sure I can probably kill someone with my elbow pads if I try to do a Tony Jia move on their head lol

Thats so weird, maybe i got a bad pair. If i just got a bad pair i would recommend them. They are very comfy.

They are not as hard as the old ones as they are not allowed to have an exposed plastic cap.

Back on topic stay away from NBK shins, i had the Nike V14's and the knee caps broke in 3 weeks of playing 3x a week. I have CCM 152 shins and they do me just fine playing semi pro over the pond in the uk.

I used Bauer 4000 shins for the last year, never felt a shot or stick through them. But I went knee first full speed into the boards and bruised up the knee pretty bad and wanted some more protection up top. I also wanted something around the back of the calves as I get chopped by the goalie and defense in front of their net.

I picked up some One90 shins as they fit a lot tighter and the 4000's were pretty loose on me (same size, 14"). They cradle the knee and the shin more than the 4000's did. They are pretty tight around the calf area but the top of the shin and knee area is looser. Also, the floating hard cap that goes above the knee was REALLY annoying and I shoved it down into the knee area as it would get caught in my pants. The calf protector is the best I've seen of any manufacturer, kind of a perforated hard plastic that wraps around.

I went knee first, much lower speed, into the boards and they offered pretty much no difference in protection, so no help there. Haven't really taken too much to the shins over the last few months, but I haven't noticed any shots or pain, so that's good.

Since you play defense, I'd look at the Bauer Lightspeed shins. They are a high end version of the 4000/6000, which have more coverage and protection than the One90's.

As for the elbows, I use Stealth S9's and love them. They stay in place better than anything else I tried on and protect just fine without a huge wrist piece. I believe the S5's are pretty similar.

i have used the 9k shins for a little bit more than 1 season, and hands down are the best protection i have ever had.. i like jumping in front slapshots, and have yet to even feel one. The only downside that they might have is that they are a bit bulky.

Elbows I would definately go with the Easton S5 or S9.

I have the S5 and they are the best elbows I've ever tried on.

I went into the store with my shoulder pads and they have the greatest mobility. I tried on everything including RBK's and those were the best.

If you can check them out.
