Stepping On Opponents Stick

This will probably get more response from gear whores here than it did at rink but I was amazed yesterday at something refs let go.

My son was playing up a bracket and having his best game ever, puck just coming to him....got off shot to top corner on a 1-timer, everything going right for him-dangled puck for 2 other goals. In 3rd, big upset and other teams mad-getting as chippy as 11 year olds can. Scrum in front of net, guy pokes at goalie hard twice after whistle so my kid coming on scene late with some momentum runs him. An opponent punches my son (with glove on, to helmet)....he does same, dropping his stick. Refs seperate them, direct teams to their benches and 1 ref is escorting boys that threw punches to box....2 minutes each, roughing-correct call fighting they would be gone.

At this point, kid my son ran is on his feet....sees my sons stick on ice....goes over to it and steps on it 3 times....other ref skates over and stops him. Three deep marks in shaft, its a $280 Jr Stealth....think its done. No call, nothing-ref chose to ignore this. Coach smartly kept my kid on bench for rest of game.

What should ref have called on a player for stomping on an opponents stick? They called nothing on my son for running kid into the net, gave roughing to kids throwing punches-my guy got a bad message on whats acceptable from these clowns.

yeah, i don't think thats acceptable. If it was my son that i saw go and stomp on another kids stick like that, he would be getting some mad discipline for a while. That shows the colors of everything bad, probably some greed/jealousy (its a nice expensive stick), and an 11 year old losing his temper like that especially against another person is not something you want to see your kids do.

That should have been called for a 5 min major for unsportsmanlike conduct. In youth hockey, this penalty would of also carried a game misconduct, and thus an ejection from the game. As a ref, especially in the youth league, I call the games VERY TIGHT with regards to unsportsmanlike attitudes. Bad habits developed at a young age will only grow exponentially with age and aggression. I nip those penalties in the butt instantly. Very unfortunate for your son....to have been disgraced like that, and to have a very nice stick damaged.

agreed. if kids that age are losing their tempers and doing dumb, mindless, careless, and disrespectful things to OTHERS' property, what more when they get older, get more competitive and probably more edgy as well.

if they don't learn early they wont ever learn.

I'm not gonna lie, I've been lining up for faceoffs and guys are dicks, I step on their sticks, only broke one. I only do it if their spearing me or whatever. Call me dirty, they won't do it again.

My bad....10min misconduct is the correct call. I just referenced my book. Maybe I should be more strict with these.

Hockey is a dangerous sport, for people and equipment. If you're not willing to lose that $280 stick after 30 seconds on the ice, don't buy it.

I understand the stick could be broken in normal play, even broken by a slash etc....you don't see a difference in what occured?

Top sticks are expensive, I'm happy to buy my son a high end OPS rather than a few $60 x box games because that's what he wants. He's happier with it-appreciates it and is thankful....necessary, no-but we all go a little overboard in some areas. He works as 'puck-farmer' when I skate some teams, pays for 1/2 when stick is needed and not B day or Xmas.

As for endurance, interesting-but I have chutes for endurance training, if you mean upper body strength that'll come later in his development.

the fact that it's a stealth has no bearing on the fact that the kid stomped his stick. whether it's a stealth or a mylec, It's still a douche move and shows a complete lack of respect and discipline. The next Chris Simon?

Nobody in youth hockey should be dropping the gloves like that. Just because the pros do it on tv does not give an excuse to a youth player to attempt to immitate the actions.

As for stepping on the stick, that's ridiculous and that kid definitely needs to sit in his room and cry for a while, but then again, I'd do the same to your kid, and every other one that was throwing punches.

Ha, i was scorekeeping a game and this dude had his composite snapped in two from a slash by a pretty level headed guy. The guy with the busted stick is a total asshole, and has gotten a match penalty or two for headbutting and other crap.

Any way, the offender got a misconduct(at the point where it was essentially an ejection, less than 10 mins in the game), and the guy with the broken stick was bitching at the ref after the game. This was right after the chris simon incident, and he was like "That was an expensive stick, man. And, this is like chris simon, man, its totally dangerous," etc. The ref, who was the league commish, was like,"what do you want me to do, i kicked him out of the game. I cant make him buy you a new one."

Its a fun story because the dude deserved to have his stick cracked in two. He's the biggest jackass in the league.

I remember a few years ago i guy on my team was using an Sl when they first came out. Him and another buddy on the other team were yapping at each other the guy on the other teams stomps of the blade, blade breaks the kid got a 2 min penalty but i think he should have gotten a 10 minute missconduct, and i think if that would have been me i would ahve tryed to break his stick anyway possible.

Hmmm....yep, I guess-reading my original post over you will see I found his behaviour unacceptable, and didn't agree with refs letting it go as incidental roughing penalties. First, hopefully last punch I'll see him throw...he was punched first though. He sure didn't need to run the kid poking at goalie, tieing up stick would have been enough. These things escalate, refs lose control letting things go. I'm suprised there wasn't more after all that only drew 2 minute penalties.

Doubt he'll be called up to play with older kids again-he will learn more from that than anything I say.

$277.01 incl taxes, paid more before-thats discounted -10% LHS price I buy a lot from. JR grip Stealth CNT may be a little less at big stores now. Since its the net, anyone can say anything- I have NP sending the receipt if by "found curious" means you doubt its true?

I had a guy try to run me and fall on my stick, not bad until he started bouncing on it and cracked it. Finished the shift and grabbed my backup before the ref came over to look at it while I was on the bench. Not that he has the right to do that, but that's another problem.

Well its not like im playing old timers and being a clown but for me anyway im usually subject to sticks to the back of the leg and wrists so if someone finds it alright to go after me or one of my team mates im going to be pretty pissed off

In my experience, nobody gets chopped for no reason. If guys are constantly cutting off your hands or whacking the backs of your legs then perhaps you should take a look at your own game. Chances are you're doing the same if not worse.
