Wrist growth from wrist shot?

Recommended Posts

I've lifted weights before and seen my wrists grow from about 6.4 to 6.7 inches after several months. 5-6 weeks ago I began taking a lot of wrist shots, probably close to 3000 total, in preparation for upcoming inline hockey season. I just measured my wrists the other day and now they're up to 7.2 inches but my forearms really haven't grown, 11 inches unflexed. I'm 5'11, 145 and still slowly filling out, despite being in my 20's. Has anyone else had similar experiences?? Not entirely sure if this is normal.

Makes sense...isn't the initial growth of a muscle much faster anyways? That particular muscle was probably not being used much so when the workload was amped up it responded accordingly?

Yeh, it does make sense. Part of why I was wondering is because I would practice wristers in the old days and not see the same response. Admittedly, my wristers used to suck and that's because I wasn't using enough of the very wrist muscles that I have taped up and sore right now!

lifting weights usually doesn't focus on the forearms and wrists, so while there's some benefit it's not as much as anything specific to those muscle groups. I had popeye arms (you know, big forearms, no real upper arm size or definition) when I was younger because I was playing hockey and rock climbing all the time, two activities that are very dependant on hands, wrists and forearms but not as straining on the other muscle groups like biceps and triceps individually as going to the gym and doing specific weight routines for.

Here is a very good hockey specific drill to build wrist/forearm/hand strength:

Cut about a 12 inch piece of an old wood stick or shaft.

Drill a hole in the middle.

Tie a piece of rope/twine through the hole, and tie the other end to a free weight.

Hold the stick with both hands out in front of your chest and 'roll' the stick over and over, twisting the rope and pulling the weight up, the reverse and let it back down.

Do this every day for a few weeks with a 10lb weight and I guarantee you will see an improvement on your shot.

Do you mean like keep rolling it till all the string has been wrapped around the stick? ... How long do you suggest doing this per day?

My wrists are killing me because I can't stop shooting, lol. I've had them taped up for 3 or 4 days. I've got a pickup game Tuesday for the first time in over 2 months, so I'm slightly obsessed. Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming!

Yeah you got it...I dunno how long I'd suggest doing it, if you give it a try you'll really feel your wrists and forearms starting to burn in no time.

stretch it out. when i was younger i used to take lots of shots on an outdoor rink in -15c weather, that plus tennis meant that my wrists pretty much all year-long. not a pleasant feeling.
