If you want more high end stuff, check out Cyclone Taylor Sports. It's located at the intersection of 49th Ave. & Oak St. If you want more mid-range equipment, there's Sport Chek on Broadway & Ontario as well as downtown in Pacific Centre Mall. There is also the Sports Exchange located on Burrard Street and I think 5th Ave. there they have lots of pro-stock sticks that you can get for like $100-150. Hope that helps! Enjoy your stay in Van! :)

If you are looking for sticks the sports exchange is by far the best for the prices. They have prostock sickicks, response lite, xxx lite, one90 and when i was there last week they had 2 xxxx's and a couple SE's they were 135 without warranty or 175 with warranty

Sports Exchange sells last year's models at a discount. If you go, tell them "the guy with the mangled one90's" sent you and they'll be happy to tack on a discount on your purchase. Especially if you're not just buying a roll of tape.

Their pro shop service is second place to Cyclone Taylor though. Toby's a great tech there.

Toby is the only guy that is reliable though. Have you ever seen some of the other guys sharpen skates or cut a stick? They totally ruin blades and are unable to cut sticks straight. I would steer away from Cyclone if you don't have Toby doing the labour.

Here's a list. Shops around here are usually really good when it comes to current stock and most of the guys know their stuff.

Burnaby: www.Scoffshockey.ca - Scoff's Hockey Shop

Cyclone Taylor - www.cyclonetaylor.com - They have 4 locations: Richmond, Coquitlam, Vancouver and recently opened a store in Surrey.

Surrey - www.thehockeyshop.com

North Van - www.myhockeystore.com - The guys working on the site are really lazy but they have great selection and they're really good with customers (ie. Danny). They gave me a good deal at the time when the one90s came out.

I drive and depending on the size of things you buy, I would rather take the 35min train each way instead of the 25-30min drive each way b/c of the cost of gas, but thats just me as I have a bus pass lying around and me liking the more scenic route. :D

Not to mention your car's going to get jacked in Surrey.

Tobi = #1

He's the only person that I let touch my gear when it comes to repairs.

A little off topic but is there any store around metro Vancouver that stock ice girdles?

I remember seeing some in Sports Exchange during the summer. You might want to call if it's not convenient for you to drop in.

Bumping this up so I don't have to start a new thread. I'm gonna be in Vancouver soon and I want to go to all three shops. Cyclone Taylor, Sports Exchange, and The Hockey Shop. If I don't have time to get to all three though, which should I consider going to first? Which one has the most selection, if it comes down to picking just one shop? I'm thinking the Hockey Shop probably, but it'd be nice to hear from people that have been there.

i went to cyclone taylors recently to buy a pair of skates. nothing special, but had skates in my size. when i called they said they had every skate i asked for in my size and when i got there they only had one pair in my size. i flew in from st. louis and luckily it was in the model i actually wanted. their website says they have a bunch of different sizes, but i guess that's not the case when you get to the store.

Depends which area you're going to be. If I had to choose only one I'd go to The Hockey Shop in Surrey. They've got the biggest selection I've ever seen locally and everything is well priced. I just don't go there as often because Cyclones is more convenient for me.

Just a heads up for everyone too, there's a new shop called Mainland Athletics just off Nanaimo and Broadway in Vancouver. It's a very small ma and pop shop but they're owned by nice people. I splurged and bought ONE90 elbows from them...

Do they just mainly have protective gear at Mainland or are there sticks too?

Cyclone Taylors has 4 locations including a warehouse that is not attached to their store, The Hockey Shop on the other hand does, so in all likelihood Cyclones did have your size but just not in that particular store at that particular time. Anyhow, I find Cyclones to be pretty good in terms of their repair and skate services but not the absolute best in terms of product selection - The Hockey Shop beats that by far.

From what I've seen, they have the largest selection in the LM. I was stunned tbh. (this is for THS btw. sorry I thought you meant THS)

As for stores, I'd definitely +1 Cyclones and THS. I live 2 mins away from Cyclone Coquitlam so I go there 90% of the time. But I'll say this- If I wasn't so lazy for the 15 minute Skytrain ride, I would definitely go to THS more often. Better selection, better prices, just a terrible location (happens to be under arguably the most dangerous train station in LM)
