Ls2 steel

Recommended Posts

im pretty new so forgive me if im doing anything wrong here :P i bought a pair of bauer vapor xix's over the summer with the normal Lightspeed 2 holders and non perforated Ls2 blades and play defense on the school team, hour and a half practice everyday and 2 to 3 games a week usually unfortunatly the blades dont seem to hold a sharp edge for long and i have to have them sharpened alot compared to my old bauer 7000's with the tuuk plus. Not only that but when i take them to get sharpened im always told that they were in horrible shape and looked like i had been walking on concrete with them and almost as if there were little peices broken off of the edge and i know those blades have never touched concrete as long as iv owned them and they always are laid out to dry on carpet with "protective" skate soakers on them and when they are in my bag one gos inside my pants and the other with the blade in my shinguard so i dont see what the problem is here <_<

i was wondering if anyone else has this problem and if its possible to take the blades off my old 7000's tuuk holders and put them on my Lightspeed holders the skates are the same size. Thanks!

As for switching the steel from the old skates and putting it into the new skates, only if they are both LS holders. If you are trying to make a Custom+ to LS switch it won't work. Have you tried a different hollow? Try getting a deeper hollow it may last a bit longer. If that doesn't work, perhaps you got a faulty batch of steel? You could order some new LS steel.

Topic has been covered on MSH quite a bit. The LS and LS2 steel is not the best quality, prone to breaking and all the other things you mention. Plus, if it was ever overheated by a poor sharpener, it will have trouble holding an edge.

There are several after-market companies making replacement steel that is excellent. If you tried one of those, you'd be plesently surprised.

I have Vapor XXV's and they are the same way. There are always knicks in the blades and they tend to rust easily. When I had LS', I never had a problem.

Thanks for the help!

Bob-- just curious is there a weight difference between the LS2 steel and the aftermarket steel?

I don't have a gram scale, I know the Hotblades weigh less, but they have a little less height so of course they will weigh less. The Step steel has more height, so they will weigh more for sure.

Hmm, I have the same skates and never had a problem. If you have a pair of the plastic skate guards get rid of them, they dont absorb the moisture from any excess snow and the blades will rust, get a pair of the cloth ones because they soak up the snow. I dont really know what to tell you bout the other stuff you mentioned though, sorry.

you shouldn't be putting the guards on while the blades are wet regardless of what the guards are made of. Yes the cloth guards soak up the snow, but they aslo hold the moisture right against the blade. You can compare it to wrapping your blades in a wet washcloth.

Well of course you dry them best you can but any little bits that you might have missed are soaked up, and on the ls2 holders in the little holes is a bitch to dry.

i usually use my sock and wipe off any snow and water then put a cloth guard on it which has a couple layers of more durable fabric on the bottom to keep the blades from getting chipped...hard to explain but they were all the place had as the holes i usually just blow any excess snow out.

Have you tried a different hollow? Try getting a deeper hollow it may last a bit longer.

Deeper hollows will generally be more prone to losing an edge, as the edges on deeper hollows are thinner.

To the OP, when you let your skates dry out, remove the soakers (and insoles) to keep the steel and rivets from rusting up. It is possible to exchange the Custom+ holders from your 7000s onto your XIXs, but you'll experience a bit of a difference in feel- the Custom+ are heel pitched whereas the Lightspeeds are neutral pitched.
