Empty Net Icing?

Recommended Posts

I'm watching the Ranger-Sabres game right now and thought of an interesting question.

Miller was pulled so there are 6 skaters on. Sabres ice the puck, which would mean that everyone on the ice at that time stays on the ice. Faceoff goes back in the Sabres zone and Miller gets back in net.

Why does Miller get to go back into the net? He was removed, and another player was substituted and was on the ice at the time of the infraction, a rested player. That totally defeats the purpose of the icing rule.

It doesn't defeat the purpose of it, since it was intended the team is not attempting to ice it for their benefit in that circumstance. It has happened a few times, goalie is always allowed back in.

NHL Rule 81.4

Line Change on Icing - A team that is in violation of this rule shall not

be permitted to make any player substitutions prior to the ensuing

face-off. Should the stoppage of play following the icing infraction coincide with a commercial time-out, or should the offending team

elect to utilize their team time-out at this stoppage of play, they are still

not permitted to make any player substitutions. However, a team shall

be permitted to make a player substitution to replace a goalkeeper

who had been substituted for an extra attacker, to replace an injured

player or goalkeeper, or when a penalty has been assessed which

affects the on-ice strength of either team. The determination of players

on ice will be made when the puck leaves the offending player’s stick

It's allowed because it's specified in the rulebook

Because the NHL hates scoring.

There is nothing more dramatic than an empty net goal from between the hash marks.

Be still my beating heart

that hilarious

i thought this topic was goign to be asking if it would be icing to shoot it down the ice and score or something, to which i was going to reply that i had a goalie do that in 14 year olds. He just moved because he thought it would be icing. So embarassing.
