Bravada 442 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 I've been sick for about the last 10 days or so. Just in the last 3 or 4 I've developed a terrible cough (that is very dry), very little energy, if I do anything active I find myself short of breath much quicker than normal, some abdominal pain when I'm coughing, a fever, and some chills.I thought it was just a slight case of the flu, but it shoudlnt' be taking this long to get over.Anyone have this before and can tell me if my symptoms sound like it?I'm going to the DR in the morning, but just curious what I should be expecting. Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 It's not fun. I had it a couple years ago, don't recall much other than being beat to hell all the time. I also ended up with full-on pneumonia. Should have seen the doctor's face when I told him I had a game that night.

It's brutal this year - from the 15th to the 19th I had a fever almost non-stop and at it's peak it got up to 103 degrees. My Wife and son had it too and she got the really bad cough about a week before I got sick and she still is coughing a bit. Ugh.
highorder 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 I was sidelined with bacterial pneumonia for 6 weeks last year. enjoy the bed sweats and caughing until you puke. I went thru 2 courses of antobiotics and respiratory rehab. I hear that oxygen treatments can really make the difference.
Bravada 442 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 We'll it turns out that I have severe bronchitis, a pretty good sinus infection, and an ear infection as well.Doc said I was probably a day or so away from pneumonia of some sort, so it was good for me to get in there. I'm on some freakin horse pills that are about the size of a lima bean and the thickness of 2. The kind of pill you can feel going down your throat. Also on some cough medicine with codeine in it that still isn't doing much for the cough but is knocking me out for a couple of hours when I take it.Said I should be over this totally in the next 4 or 5 days, but she said me playing in an ice game last night definitely aggrivated the bronchial tubes because of the coldness of the air. Oops.

Bravada 442 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Just curious, what antibiotic are you on?I'm on some cough syrup with codeine in it as well as 875mg of Augmentin twice a day.All I know is the cough syrup isn't doing shit. I can only take 5cc every 6-8 hours and that just seems like such a small amount and it isn't really relieving the cough or causing any pleghm or anything to come up. Fletch 219 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 My Doctor gave me an antibiotic I had never taken before called "Bactrim DS" and for the first couple days I was fine but then it tore my stomach up so bad I had to stop taking it. Luckily I was pretty much over my sinus infection and flu by then. Then I read a bunch of stuff online about some big movement to get Bactrim taken off the market because of such sever adverse reactions. Yay.
Roach 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 I too had mild flu-like symptoms a few weeks ago.I had pneumonia years ago and that wasn't fun. I had to walk in the rain for 2 hours then sit in a car with airconditioning (still raining outside) for another 8 hours due to flooding. I recovered in 2 weeks then had a relapse which lasted for another week.I took Augmentin for both.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Augmentin isn't the greatest antibiotic. I'm a little surprised about the dose of cough syrup you're on. Is the 5cc q 6-8hrs how it's written on your rx label? Most that I see are written 5-10cc q 6-8hrs unless the person is like 80 pounds sopping wet.Fletch- we still use a lot of Bactrim in the hospital, but we also usually always have standing orders for IV Phenergan and/or Zofran to take care of the nausea right away. Fletch 219 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Zithromax always works well for me....and it's only a 5 day thing too. Much better than 10 days like some other ones.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 My wife had a three day course of Z-max a couple weeks ago and it worked well for her too. When it's feasible, I'm all for the shorter courses too, as with the longer ones you run the risk of people not taking it for the whole course and developing resistant strains. foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2008 What's the name of the cough syrup? I'd like to look it up. I've never seen an Rx written for just 1 teaspoon per dose. Maybe your syrup has more codeine per ml than most...
Bravada 442 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2008 It's called Cheratussin AC
lampliter87 8 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 Had it two years ago toward the end of the season without even knowing it. I thought it was a cold, but after it had been three weeks and nothing had improved I went to the doc and, lo and behold, I had played through walking pneumonia. Not a fun time. I don't care what anyone says, get it checked out and get some antibiotics.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 It's called Cheratussin ACSure enough, it's supposed to be 5ml per dose rather than 10ml like most cough syrups I've seen. Feeling any better yet?
GrafPro55 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2008 Sounds like all you sick guys aren't drinking enough beer after hockey. That could be the problem.

They also prescribed me Vicodin, I thought it was strange to give APAP to someone with very uneven pupils even with a clear head CT.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2008 From a nurse's standpoint, I love Zofran as compared to Phenergan. Generally, I've seen it to be more effective in taking away the nausea and you don't see anywhere near as much of the drowsiness that's common with Phenergan. As far as the concussion and Vicodin, it does sound a little strange, but not knowing specific details, I couldn't comment one way or the other.
