Skate blade holder rivet holes enlarging

Recommended Posts

I have 1 1/2 yr old 8090s with LS2 holders, and both seem to have developed oval rivet holes. I can move both holders side-to-side by hand, and tightening the rivets doesn't help.

Is there a way to patch the holes? Or, is it time for new holders? And, is this a common problem?

Can't say I've personally seen it, however I think "patching" the holes in the holder would not only be extremely difficult if not impossible, so replacing them would be the best bet. But I would be curious as to the if the rivet holes gave way in the boot. That would be my most concern.

You might be able to fill the holes with epoxy (give Billy Mays a shout and order-up some Mighty Putty), redrill the holes and then remount the holders.

Replace the rivets with #8 machine screws and nuts. Not pretty but it does the trick.

Drop of thread lock on the nuts, cut off the excess screw & file smooth.

I've also used T-Nuts to mount a roller chassis but it's alot more work & drilling to enlarge the holes.

Best way to correct it is to leave everything as is, align the holder checking that the blade is straight, then drill new virgin holes between the rivets and install new rivets. 4-6 rivets should hold it in place.

+1 for this idea. It's simple and effective. I've done it plenty of times. Just make sure that the original rivets are replaced or tightened to ensure that they share the load and not just the new rivets.

the holes are enlarging on the holders or the outsole?

I think the holes are enlarging on the holders, because when I wiggle the holders the rivets are not moving.

i first read this as "I have a 1 1/2 yr old with 8090s with LS2 holders,"

LOL

No, I am a 40 1/2 yr old with 1 1/2 yr old 8090s that have LS2 holders... confusing for sure! :D

It looks like it happened to others; thanks for the ideas.
