flex question

Recommended Posts

picked up a game used craig conroy stick yesterday, and its maybe 2 inches bigger than my other stick which on skates sits at my mouth. I can flex pretty good right now, I generally use a 65 flex. I know when you cut a stick it becomes stiffer. Im not sure if i should suck it up and just choke down on the stick when i play or cut and never be able to shoot with it again. anyone have any ideas?

Choking down will generally have the same effect as cutting it down. If it's as bad as your making it sound playing with a stiffer stick, you may as well sell it and get something with a 65 flex.

What flex is Conroy's stick that it's so close to a 65 flex?

I'd give it a shot before cutting it down, but if it's tapered, it shouldn't get dramatically stiffer if cutting off an inch or two.

Neither of these options makes any sense. You're going to alter your game just to fit a stick ?

You shouldn't make your game fit your equipment; your equipment should fit your game. If you're worried about it, get rid of it because you'll think too much about it being too stiff to too long, or something else.

I guess I left out that ive tried so many 65 flexes and havent had any success with them, used an st, xxxx, se. I used my friends sherwood taper 95 flex and cut it down and scored way more goals with it even tho i could barely flex it . Conroys stick is stiffer than my 65 so I was hoping to meet somewhere in the middle. But I like where it is and dont really want to cut it down. Was hoping there were some tricks out there that I wasnt aware of...

Lol didnt realize I made myself sound like an ididot.

and i think its an 85 flex.

About the only trick I know of is to try different flexes and different lengths until you find one that works for you, then try different curves until you find one that works for you, then try different brands until you find one that's comfortable.

What is it about the 65 flex that isn't working for you? Have you tried any 75 or 85 flex? And are you comfortable with the height of the stick?

Since ive switched to it my wrist shot is way weaker but my slapshot actually comes off the ice (in girls hockey that is huge), found with the sherwood that it was way harder. but couldnt get a decent slapshot off. Generally the only time that i ever get a slapshot off is in warmup and practice so i wanted to go stiffer.

Ive tried my friends 85 and found that my wrist shot is way harder and more accurate.

And i didnt even know they made 75 flex sticks. Im just trying to find a stick that will get my shot working again.

I just came back from a stick and puck session and the stick flex makes all the difference in the world. I took shots with both a cut-down regular flex 7K and un-cut 85 flex z-bubble and the z-bubble was better in every shot, hands down. I could get a decent slap shot with the 7k but my wristers suffered.

My point is you definitely want to be using a flex within your weight (or strength) range.

ie. if you weigh approx 170 lbs or you're ~150 but fairly strong, use an 85 flex.

Also, maybe your technique could be the reason why you're not getting slapshots off the ice? I can understand not being able to get a riser off a 100 flex but a 65 flex usually send shots to the glass from the hands of a hard shooter.

Something to do with the curve maybe?

Well my experience is that lower flex gives better wrist shots, higher flex gives better slap shots. The rough rule of thumb is use a flex that's half your weight, but that doesn't account for height, stick length, and style of game.

It sounds like you want something stiffer than 65 flex but not as stiff as 85 flex. For shafts, you can get Dolomites in 75 flex, Synergy II's in 70 flex, and XXX Lites in 77 flex. They shouldn't be too far from each other, and you can use a senior blade in them.

Otherwise, see if you can't try a couple shots with your teammates' sticks.
