New(ish) to hockey.. any tips?

Recommended Posts

Hey..!

I'm newish to hockey, only been playing six months but I LOVE it!

I play ice three days a week and will be starting roller soon; I also practice for 50 mins on my rollers a day and about 40 mins stick handling.

Is this enough?? And is conditioning really important?

You'll only benefit from conditioning, no doubt. Hard to give any specific info without knowing what you think your weak points are, but the more you play the more you'll get a feel for what to do.

Hey,

I'm in the same position as you but reverse, jumping from ice to roller. I think you're practicing plenty, in fact, maybe too much. I liken it to weight lifting, you'll get a lot better results lifting 4 days a week than 7... I was practicing wristers every day and stickhandling whenever I didn't work on my wrist shots, needless to say, I didn't get the improvement I had hoped for.

The highest level of hockey you play is a reflection of your skating ability. All the other elements are important, but skating is first. Go to public skate as often as possible, and work on your edges, crossovers, pivots, etc. It's all about being fast and smooth.

+1 on skating

i have seen many players with sweet stick handling in practice but in a game cant pull anything off cause everyone can catch them too easily
