LHJMQ's playoffs: the other incident.

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I know I'm probably the only person here who feels that way, but...I've always felt that if a goalie comes out of his cage SPECIFICALLY TO PLAY THE PUCK then he should be fair game for physical contact.

If a goalie is trying to stop the puck, you can't touch him, but if he wants to handle the puck like a skater, make him fair game to get hit just like any other player. I would think this rule would allow the NHL to get rid of the stupid trapezoid they have behind the nets.

Also, I know all the arguments that if goalies are fair game it opens them up to being run, but I don't really buy them. If a player takes a 60 foot run at a goalie it is still charging or roughing, just like it would be if he took a 60 foot run at another player. In the case of the video, I would say a penalty should be called on the guy for the run he took at the goalie.

Again, I'm not advocating making goalies fair game all the time, only in the instances when they attempt to play the puck like a skater.

I agree with shooter27 too, if the goalie is out trying to set up a play he should be fair game but in that case i dont think it would be fair..

Haha, regardless of whether or not we think a goalie should be fair game if he's out playing the puck, the rule right now is that he's NOT fair game. That makes that a pretty dirty, albeit extremely funny play.

I thought that was hilarious though...I'm not quite sure what was going through that guy's head when he went full tilt at the goalie, lol.

Lol, it kind of reminded me of this youtube clip at :10 and 1:45.

The only thing I have against goalies being fair-game to handle the puck is their equipment is meant to block shots and not from hits from 160-200+ pound men.....

I think Iginla lost that fight haha and at the end of it i think Giggy was getting a little antsy to fight

Wow....on first instinct I kind of thought the forechecker was going to try and slip between the goalie and the post there to get to the puck, maybe he wasn't looking straight ahead or something? Tough to tell without a replay, but I can't believe anyone would be that stupid to just flat out run a goalie like that, looked like maybe a bit of an accident.

Whether or not you think you should be allowed to hit the goalie, the fact is that you're not allowed to, and you have to abide by the rules of the game whether you agree with them or not. And being that you're not allowed to hit the goalie; when you just decide to, the goalie doesn't expect it, and has no chance to prepare himself to be hit, and could be seriously hurt. Even if that had been a skater he hit, it would have been a dirty hit because the puck is long gone from his stick, and he charges him full speed from center ice. Indefensible play in every way.

haha that was pretty funny, i think whether or not the goalie is fair game or not it will still cause brawls if the goalie does get hit.

I completely agree that the hit in question was dirty, it was definitely a charge and you could probably make a case that it warranted more than one penalty.

My point about goalies being fair game has to do with the rules of the game in general, not this particular hit.

haha these days?

listening to ym dads stories it osunds like kids nowadays are much more tame than they were in the 60's adn 70's.

I agrree with being allowed to take out the goalie if he tries to play the puck, i've nearly killed myself trying to avoid goalies when being the first guy in on a dump.

So the guy who rocked the goalie got 6 games.

Maybe the NHL should hire the Q's disciplinarians. They seem to act swiftly and harshly...

What, if anything do you figure a guy would get in the NHL for running a goalie like that? Seeing as how head first into the boards has been getting 1 or 2 all year?

Well it would probably depend on who did it. Chris Simon, thats a 20-30 gamer and Pronger about a game lol

I'm afraid I opened up a whole new can of worms....dear god what did I do

what if they allowed hitting the goalie if they play it outside the trapezoid?

seems fair to me

I like that idea, so the goalies can play it if they want to be safe or they can take the chance of getting hammered and make a big play.

It was also lead to an incredible number of injuries.

Every guy on the ice *except* the goalie has been training to take hits since he was 12, and taking them day-in, day-out since then.

Now you want to open goalies up to full contact with zero preparation?

It would actually be less dangerous to hit the refs.
