kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 Hey guys, I have hockey tryouts on sunday. There are 2 tryouts that are an hour each. I have one tryout and then I have an hour inbetween before the next. I bought Endurox to take between as a recovery drink http://www.drugstore.com/qxp39751_334918_s...fruit_punch.htm. Looking at the nutrition, will this benefit me or no? I suppose it would help refuel me with the protein and carbs, but what do you think

hockeyherb 1 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 Interestingly, I just bought a book recently called The Performance Zone. It's all about Nutrition for sports but mostly deals a lot about hydration and re-hydration.You're doing well to use the Endurox - the author cites research that shows after workouts you need to supplement to allow your body to shift into muscle-building from muscle-depleting mode, and to do that you need protein along with your carbs. The book has all kinds of charts on how many calories are burned during particular excercise and how much liquid you'd need to drink to recover. He suggests using Accelerade instead of Gatorade because it has the added protein missing from Gatorade, but if you expend a ton of calories (as it sounds like you'll be doing) you don't want to have to drink 2 gallons of Accelerade so something more energy dense like Endurox is preferable. For example, if you need to replace say 56g of carbs after a workout, you'd have to drink 32 oz of Accelerade and only 13 oz of Endurox.Stick with what you're doing. g0o0nshow 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 Glutamine mixed in Gatorade or diluted Gatorade. Helps with muscle replenishment an repair, I used this combination when I was in your situation.
Jordan 13 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 I would stay away from the protien shakes; they are good fro post work out, but could be too heavy for between workouts. You are looking to replace glycogen stores (which is done by consuming carbohydrates) and to hydrate. stick with the gatoraid typ drinks... and perhaps a power bar.Don't eat or drink anything that you haven't tried before. The worst thing that could happen to you is stomach ache or to develop cramps.

Zamboni 6 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 Don't eat or drink anything that you haven't tried before. The worst thing that could happen to you is stomach ache or to develop cramps.Good advice-saw a kid who couldn't go for final scrimmage at tryouts last year. Not a good time to experiment, personally like water and a few orange slices and gatorade later for electro's sweated out...my kid likes gatotade in middle for sugar rush I think. Its said if you feel thirsty you waited too long to hydrate-keep repleneshing. jon93 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 how would the gnc 100% whey drinks work? i use about 2 scoops in 2% milk so around 60 some grams of protein. tryouts just ended an hour ago an i already drank it so i hope this helps recover quickly
Maka 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 I'm pretty sure that's an unnecessary amount of protein. I could have sworn that the max amount of protein the human body can handle in a given instance is around 30-35 grams.
wc19 1 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 looks good. If you really need energy and since the tryouts are an hour which is relatively pretty short you can have a chocolate bar. It'll give you a good boost of energy for around an hour, just remember to drink lots of water though.
greatsave31 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 I actually read that Harvard did a medical study saying that Chocalate milk is one of the best recovery drinks available and the results from athletes proved to have better data.
dix0r 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 seems like chocolate milk is getting more attention as a potential 'sports drink' recentlyi've started drinking it recently. i like it now, despite hating it when i was younger. i tried drinking it on the bench during a game (it's certainly not 'refreshing') and didn't notice any difference. i'm only playing beer league mind you, but in all my years of competitive soccer, i never really noticed any difference between water or gatorade or endurox or whatever. the only time i felt like my performance was affected by diet was as a result of eating too close to game time. or drinking too much and feeling heavy. kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted April 12, 2008 What would you guys suggest I have to eat for breakfast? Kind of going off of the topic, but Im curious and need suggestions. Would 1 egg on a bagel be good? How much water should I drink in the morning? I dont want to drink too much and feel heavy like dixor said.

wc19 1 Report post Posted April 13, 2008 chocolate milk is excellent as a recovery drink cause its high in sugar content which is absorbed quick through the body to replenish your glycogen stores which was used up by your body as energy. Never tried glutamine but heard it works but I think I'll just stick to my flax seeds.
willsnipe 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2008 I always thought that any milk (chocolate included) would be too heavy. Just drink it in moderation i assume?

biff44 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2008 I remember 1.5 grams per pound. The trick is that the body can not take that much protein in 3 meals a day. It can only absorb so much protein at a time, and any excess just goes down the toilet. So you have to space it out in perhaps 6 meals a day.
