Easton S15 for 10 year old Query

Recommended Posts

My son is 10 & about 85 pounds. I have a heck of a time getting him skates that "work" (ie. dont hurt his feet, he has a narrow foot & very narrow heel which creates problems) but have had some sucess with Easton. This last year he wore a pair of Easton 555's (a Source for Sport skate) that worked pretty good.

My question is this. I am considering trying him in a pair of S15's, size 3-3 1/2. Are these too stiff for him? He's a good skater, & plays AAA hockey.

A kid on his team this last winter had a pair & his dad said he had no problems with them, in terms of stifness or otherwise.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've personally never believed in top-of-the-line for growing kids. Stiffness is one consideration, not just because they could be too stiff, but also because the kid won't develop any ankle strength.

it wouldn't be a bad skate for him to have, considering the frequency he'd be on the ice in AAA hockey. but i'd head to a lhs and get him fitted properly; have him walk around on the skates for 15 minutes or so, and if the shop will let him try them on with a bake, i'd do that before dropping the cash.

it's never the best idea to go with a skate that's been recommended by another hockey parent, because there's a good chance his kid's feet are gonna be shaped differently than your kid's.

Easton skates aren't narrow, in fact they're among the widest standard width on the market.

narrow heel and narrow foot with easton ?

I have both and didn't like easton for my feet.

good fit for me was graf's

Well, last year he tried the Bauer Vapor, Supreme & RBK 5k & each one of them really hurt his heel (almost like pressure blisters).

The year before tried Grafs 502 & 735's & they had the same effect (ended up using RBK 3k's).

For whatever reason, the Easton 555's worked & he wasnt sloppy in them (he's always used superfeet).

As you can see, getting him a skate that works is/can be a very time consuming & frustrating ordeal.

are you actually getting him fitted for these skates or just order off the web? How long is he trying the skates out before he gives up on them?

Considering your 10 year old has gone through 6 pairs of skates in a few years I think you should rethink your process. Of course since you've almost bought every skate on the market, you may just want to give the S15's a try.

Having just read this entire thread again, if the 555 skates are the only ones you can find that work well, why do you want to change?

Does he actually have a Easton wide heel or are those skates' heels too wide for his foot and causing blisters from sliding around?

Perhaps some of the other skates were improperly sized and that was the cause of the problem.

My brother is 10 and has S15's. He also plays AAA hockey and has a narrow foot. He loves them and I think they are working really good for him.

He was fitted for the skates. Trust me , many pairs were tried on. Most he was pretty sloppy in, but not the 555's.

Oh, in terms of how long he would try the skates, he would go for at least a couple & inevitably, he couldnt handle the pain (as indicated, it was about an inch up from his heel bone, just off centre. It wouldnt blister, it would just be red causing me to think that there wasnt a whole lot of slippage.

In terms of why a different skate, I dont believe they make the 555's anymore & I was just kinda curious as to how the S15's would be, particularly in terms of stiffness for the little guy but also in terms of overall fit. I of course would get him fitted for a skate at the LHS, but if the s15 was a materially different than the 555's fit or way to stiff for him , I just would waste my time even thinking about going that route (at least, waste anymore of mine or anybody elses time)..

the stealth 555 is still going on for this year. the s15 forefoot does not fit anything like a 555, as chadd said, the s15 forefoot is one of the widest, however im finding the 555 fits narrow throughout. if you wanted to go with a stiffer boot, i would put him in a 777. unless hes developed a flex point on his skate, he hasnt destroyed it just yet, so i wouldnt suspect a top end boot would be necessary. in all likelihood he may be able to flex the boot in the store, but he may not flex it when hes skating, which will hamper his skating.
