Political Correctness

Recommended Posts

Hey, for english class we all have to take turns leading a class discussion, starting with handing out the same article to everyone. I've decided my subject is on "is school becoming to politically correct?". Or possibly switch 'school' with 'society'. Anyway, i need an article to get the ball rolling. Does anybody remember anything that's happened in the recent (we'll say year) that would fit this?

Side note incase anybody is interested in starting a discussion, my opinion in a nutshell is that with all of this work being done to make everyone "feel included" so to speak, is actually dividing differences even more. It's segregating every different kind of person.

As much as I hate to say this, Bill O'Reilly makes some good points about this very issue. You can pick up any of his books at the library and use them as a hard-bound source or check his website. Even though I'm overall pretty liberal, I recognize Political Correctness as one of the great free speech threats of our time.

I'm not disputing what he says about political correctness, because beyond 'he doesn't like it,' I don't know what that would be - I haven't read his books, and I'm lucky enough to live in Canada where I don't have to see him on TV - but I would not cite Bill O'Reilly as a reference in an academic setting.

I remember a story in one of the papers back home when we were home for a holiday a few years ago.

EDIT: It wasn't Belfast City Council, it was the Irish department of trade and enterpise in belfast had banned the word "brainstorming" instead changed the name to "idea gathering meetings" not "brainstorming sessions".

The reason, brainstorming might be offensive to epileptics.

Talk about PC gone wild.

If you are sticking to PC in school, google for the articles about teachers not marking tests or homework in red pen because it has a negative effect on the kids.

Or participation ribbons on sports day.

Brainstorming story - http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/new...cally-offensive

NEXT TIME the management drags you into one of those god awful 'brainstorming' meetings, you can refuse on the grounds that they are politically incorrect and banned by Irish civil servants.

Unfortunately, the method which aims to generate ideas among staff, is considered OK. But Ireland's Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) in Belfast have to use another word to describe them.

Apparently brainstorming is considered offensive to people with brain disorders such as epilepsy as well those with brain tumours or brain injuries.

A spokeswoman told the Observer that the DETI does not use the term brainstorming on its training courses on the grounds that it may be deemed pejorative.

The Campaign for Plain English, which does not really stand for a lot of marketing or management buzzwords, has said that the decision had 'reached the point of real ridicule'.

Spokesman John Wild wondered if some people haven't got anything better to do with their time.

The best bit in the article....

He said that while certain terms that should be deemed out of bounds, sometimes things go too far. He was certain that those who dreamt this up were not suffering from any brain disease or injury, but were the types of people who wanted to find offence everywhere.

The word that DETI officials will use instead of Brainstorming will be 'thought-showers', which might be offensive to the terminally smelly, or those who are in a coma, but at least they are not golden

That reminds me that someone told me some school systems aren't giving "failures." They're giving "deferred success."

in the words of the great MC Paul Barman:

If someone uses a non-offensive vocabulary, that person is CONSIDERATE, not PC.

If someone has a heavy-handed agenda, that person is NARROW-MINDED, not PC.

Unless you mean Providence College, PC is as meaningless as the president's apology for slavery
