ALBANY, N.Y. - Ryan Potulny scored in the fifth overtime, ending the longest game in American Hockey League history as the Philadelphia Phantoms beat the Albany River Rats 3-2 Thursday night.

The marathon game clocked in at 142 minutes, 58 seconds and eclipsed the previous record of 134 minutes, 56 seconds set in Game 2 of the 2003 Calder Cup final between the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Houston Aeros. Michael Ryder scored the winner as the Bulldogs escaped with a 2-1 win in a game where Hamilton netminder Ty Conklin and Houston goaltender Johan Holmqvist combined to make 162 saves.

Philadelphia took a 3-2 lead in the first-round Calder Cup series with the win.

Albany goaltender Michael Leighton made an incredible 98 saves in a losing effort. Leighton's performance made Scott Munroe's exceptional 65-save effort look pedestrian in comparison.

Jared Ross scored twice in regulation for Philadelphia, including the game-tying goal at 15:13 of the third period.

Kiel McLeod scored both Albany goals.

I just saw the highlights on TSN it was funny, they interviewed greentree who is on the phantoms and they said he got 17 shots on goal that game and he said well i guess thats a pretty bad shooting percentage.

is it possible we see a repeat?

or at least another head to head matchup between lundqvist and conklin.

NY plays PIT in round 2.

lundqvist currently is the starter for NYR but andre-fleury (conklin is backup) is in goal for PIT.

... they should put conklin in.

marc andre fleury just let 2 goals past him 3.43 into the 2nd.

Well that and Fleury just won (GO PENS). Personally, I like Fleury more than Conklin; Conklin I felt filled in well as a backup, but started to struggle a bit soon before Fleury returned. I think he started to struggle with the load of the season. I believe in Fleury :P

my bad. i get those two mixed up ALWAYS. i think its the -qvist at the end of their last names.

Fleury won.. but he scared me the whole game until PIT came roaring back with the back to back goals (x2).. what were they? first set of goals.. 14 secs apart and the second set of goals less than 30 seconds apart.. insanity.

great game!

Wonder how the long game will affect them today when they play. I'm going to the game in a super box for free and I'm hoping it's not gonna be slow because they're still getting their legs back.

Just got home from Game 6, and what do you know, it went into OT again! Little over halfway through one of the River Rats scored to end the game 1-0. Great game for the goalies as the shots were around 40 a piece.
