Job Reference?

Recommended Posts

My friend's applying for a job in law enforcement and is using me for a reference and wants my SSN? I'm uncomfortable in giving it out and I wouldn't think they necessarily need it. Just looking for some feedback as I don't think they really need that info.

That is odd- I have provided references for municipalities, States, D.O.D. & DHS and have never seen a request for a Soc Sec #. I would decline. I can't think of a reason it would be needed, unless they are doing a background check on you as well.

Not odd at all. When I was subject to my FBI background check, I had to provide SSNs of people who could confirm my past.

Maybe it is just because it is a Law Enforcement job that they are extra careful with the people they use as Ref.

Is this a "Character Reference" or has your buddy worked for you.

I didn't have to provide that information for my background check. I'd consider it very odd.

You shouldn't have to and don't have to, and there is really nothing your friend's hiring department can do about it.

Your friend's SSN should be all they need, and with all the identity theft today I'm surprised they ask for reference SSN's, beings most people like yourself are weary about giving it out. Ask your friend to ask the department why it is necessary. The departments I applied with were big on providing references but none asked for their SSN's.

If they absolutely need it I would be careful. Tell him that your phone number is there and that if they really want it they can call you and explain why they need it. Chances are you won't get the call, or you will and they'll give you a good reason for needing it.

I can't imagine not having the SSN of a reference being a killer for an applicant.
