Normal Skate wear?

Recommended Posts

I have attached some pics below to describe if the wear is normal for a skate? This is happening on all 4 sides of this part of the skate, these being the worst. The skate is a RBK 9k, worn twice a week for about 6 months.

I do not tuck the tongue under my shin pads, just leave it over.

Am I doing something wrong?

Is something like this covered under warranty?

From what I can tell, its rubbing against the tongue.

Thanks

it's hard to tell from your picture because they are to close and kind of blurry. Do your shin guards rub on the top of your skates?

Yeah, looks like rubbing from the tongue to the liner, or from your shins to your liner. Unfortunately, not covered, it's considered wear and tear. Similar to if you had rubbing between your heel and the liner and the liner started to wear a hole. The tongue wear is normal, rubbing from your skating motion.

If you have a shoe repair or skate repair near you, you can get them to place a piece of material that can resist wear.

Yeh, the bottom of my shin guard does rub against it. Am I am wearing it too low?

I really do not want to ruin this skate any further, it cost me an arm and a leg. Was the only one that fit me nicely.

If that is the case, logically then this wear should be normal, therefore should be further reinforced by the manufacturer.

I miss the old material days. Have a Bauer before this, inside was mainly leather, that thing was build like a tank.

The tongue wear is natural, there is always going to be friction between the tongue and skate, due to the natural movements of your ankle while skating. Most of the time the wear is on the outside of the skate. I've notice that newer skates have been wearing faster than older, a friend of mine has gone through three tongues on his Vapor XXXX in one year of skating. My older Supreme 5000 have worn, but not to the point of wearing through, my skates have thicker felt, IMO a better quality, cuz I've had the skates for 6 years.

As for the shins, that's crappy, as it's similar to the effects as the tongue. Again, you'll have to get it repaired/patched, which I highly recommend before you wear it more.

My Supremes were made with Bauer's first attempt at a hydrophobic synthetic material, and it was so bad that they changed back to clarino the next year. It's so bad that I have many holes in my liner in different parts of the skate from it wearing down so quickly, but the fit is perfect so I didn't want to get it replaced at the time. I have the same type of wear, but I had to live with it and tuck my shins outside of the tongue.

Looks like the same amount of wear I normally encoutner. I have had similar looking patches on 3 pairs of skates in pretty much the exact same spots. As one of the other guys said this is what just happens to modern skates.

JR, I assume Bauer doesn't use leather for cost, weight and water retention reasons?

Some guys wear their shinnys on the outside. I cannot, it doesn't feel natural. Give it a go but it may help. As I've never done it before I cannot say if it will help out in terms of durability, but worth a shot.

Don't believe cost is a factor, but all of those plus durability. The leather will rot out and crack - Clarino doesn't.

Isn't a synthetic material less prone to supply variables then something that comes from animals like leather? Is this just my logic or am I reaching? ;)

Oh, with those new pics, the plastic edge plus the thread stitching is totally rubbing. Those may be too long of a shin length, you may want to get shorter length shins or tuck the tongue under.

I wear RBK 7K skates and I wear my shins over the tongue. I skate about 4-5 times a week and I'm getting the same type of wear on my skates. It might just be something that happens with the RBK skates, but I would definitely say it's just normal wear and tear.

I would definately try putting the shin pad over the top of your tounge. The hard plastic that far into your skate will just rub them like a knife. If you can't get on with wearing them like that you'll need to wear shorter shin pads that don't go down inside your skate and just rest behind the tounge of the skate

For whatever reason, in those pics with your foot in the skate it just doesnt look like it'd be comfortable to wear your shin guards like that... As a few have already said, they look a bit big for you - I dont think I've ever seen the plastic part inside the boot like that or at least that far... Try them on the outside though before you guy and buy new ones.

yeh, i think my shin guards are suspects.

I tried my old shin pads yesterday, the plastic stops just before the skates and placed my shin pad over the tongue. That seems to be doing the trick.

I did not notice any difference while skating, so I guess I will stick with my old shin pads and shin pad over tongue.

But, I will have to get the damaged repaired too.

Thanks all.
