hockey shops in the massachusetts/RI area?

Recommended Posts

I searched as best I could and didn't see any particular threads with relevant info- but if one exists, I apologize in advance; send me on my way!

I am going to be visiting my parents in southeastern massachusetts at the end of this month and wanted to hit a few stores while I was there; because I live in pittsburgh and have only checked out a few places while back in mass I don't know what really exists in the area these days and what kind of stock and service any of them really offer..

here's my situation: I just got new skates last december, but I'm not real happy with them and I think they are exacerbating my haglund's.. which really only developed in the last year and hasn't been too bad, thankfully. even though I was wearing the identical model bauers' for a good year prior with no problems, once I got these new ones on my feet and broke them in, I've noticed the bumps getting bigger and more tender.. so I don't want to mess around; I'd rather cut my losses (which would be minimal since I got my current pair at a great price, and figured I'd move on to bigger and better skates once I had improved a little) and do it right this time.

since there seem to be a lot more shops and hockey-knowledgeable people in the new england area than where I live, I figured it might be a good time for me to check out some skates and have someone who knows about haglund's go through a FITTING with me instead of just throwing diffferent boxes of skates at me to try on.

have you had a good customer service experience with any particular shop? anything within a couple hours of providence or boston would be worth checking out if I could find someone who knows how to help me find a boot that will fit my wide feet and won't agitate the haglund's bumps too badly...

thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations!

I think Pure Hockey has been taken over by Breakaway--there is another thread on this topic. In my opinion Pure Hockey was never the best place to be fitted due to lots of inexperienced staff.

Zwickers (Bedford, MA) and Sports, Etc. (Arlington, MA).

I'd second Zwicker's got mine radiused there and always get them sharpened there they do a great job and really take their time to get it right, I've seen them do a few fittings and they do a very thorough job.

I'll third the nod to Zwickers. They know what they are doing and you won't be disappointed.

Cool. Looks like it is only a half hour drive from my in-laws in Waban/Newton. I will be there for 2 weeks in December.

Was just there 3 weeks ago....wish I went then.

Saw Jason Varitek, he lives a few streets over. Nice guy....for a Red Sox.

I know there is a Breakaway (ex-Pure Hockey?) in Franklin, one town over from my parents' house in Norfolk.. I actually bought my current skates there around Christmas-time.. they were very friendly and it's a nice shop; I like to window shop and check for deals there whenever I'm home to visit, but I wasn't blown away by their knowledge in the skate fitting department, hence my solicitations for more information here..

Anyway, awesome- thanks for the input so far. Zwickers sounds very promising.

Cooks in Wilmington. THE BEST hands down. If your looking for skates this is the place to go. They are experts. The guy who fits skates can watch u walk up and down an isle in bare feet and then tell you what type of skate. They do crazy things to skates.

Depending on what part of Boston, it would be a little less than a 1/2 hour. They used to have a decent selection of goalie gear, if I remember correctly, but I don't really look at that. Another 1/2 hour and you can hit No Icing in Hudson, NH. "Jimmy", I believe, is a goalie and they seem to have plenty of pads about.

I hit Zwicker's this morning and was very very pleased with the selection and the service. After trying on several pairs and several brands, I wound up buying a new pair of Bauer Vapors (long story short = I've been wearing the wrong size. Maybe I'm asking for trouble.. but they just feel so perfect for my foot and nothing else feels like it fits!) and they baked, stretched and punched (and re-punched) them for me until they felt like a glove on my feet and the bone spurs felt like they weren't even there. Anyway, thanks for the recommendations, guys..

All the skate fitters are my buddies from here in Franklin-they're good kids but the +1 on the knowledge dept.

I'm also heading to Mass. Does Zwickers carry a lot of goalie equipment and would it be a long drive from Boston? Thanks

Check Sports Etc; I believe they're in Arlington. Wicked good goalie selection.
