dont know what to do...

so in my grandfathers will, he left his 4 grand children (me being one of them) his piggy bank full of quarters. tonight we finally cracked it open and emptied it out. devided it out, and we each got 128.75 in quarters. heres the interesting bit, every single quarter in the piggy bank was the horse quarters that were around in canada since 1973, so basically 515 dollars of this very quarter. he wrote that we should spend it, so i dont know if i should just take it to the bank and get bills for it, or try to sell them because they are apparently worth something.

any ideas?

Or more , depending on the rarity of some of them. I don't know anything about that stuff, but I don't see how it world hurt to look into. You also may want to put a few aside as a keepsake.

Discuss it with y our parents too. It's about honoring his wishes, but did your grandfather have any idea that there could be added value to what he left you. He told you to spend it right? So, if it turns out that they are worth more than he thought...you could sell them then you have more to spend and you really haven't gone against his wishs for the coins.

FYI:

During 1973 a special issue of quarters was struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Along with the commemorative reverse showing a Mounted Police officer, the obverse with the Queens head was lightly modified from previous years.

# 1973 .............................. PROOF-LIKE $ 1.50

Early in 1973, a small number of the quarters were accidently struck using a 1972 obverse die with the regular large head with less detail, and the more numerous smaller beads around the border. These are known as the large bust variety, and it is estimated that only about 1 in 10,000 of the 1973 quarters is this variation. About half of which come from mint sets, and are found in both the proof-like and specimen sets.

# 1973 large bust ........ meter scratches XF-40 SOLD

# 1973 large bust ............ in Proof-Like set $325.00

See if any of them have a large bust of the Queen.

By horse quarter, i assume you mean the caribou, and there still in circulation and unless there the special mint that radio mentioned there not going to be worth more than 25 cents. It doesnt hurt though to get them checked out.
