No ads on the boards...

Recommended Posts

I'm sitting here watching NHL Network, and they have a game on from 1985 between Edmonton and Winnipeg. I was thinking to myself, "something looks weird" besides the wood sticks. ;) The lack of ads on the boards (and in the ice) really makes the rink look "naked." Not complaining, just strange after watching so many modern games. Hell even my local rink is loaded with ads.

I just watched a copy of the 1980 Miracle game loaned from a friend. I discovered the same thing. The rink looks so huge with just the clear boards etc. Very strange.

They play on a bigger surface in the Olympics, so that is probably one reason it looks massive.

Not in 2010 they won't.

i thought they were building a new rink for it?

Are they changing to NHL dimensions or an in between size?

NHL, and IMO it's a lame cost cutting move on the part of the Vancouver Committee. From what I understand, they don't want to pay for the modification of GM Place, so instead they are going to push to make International Ice match NHL Dims.

That's beat. One of the best parts of olympic hockey is international sized ice.

I agree. Let the best players in the world play on the most ice possible. More room to make plays.

Makes it more different to the NHL and in my opinion evens things up for some for some of the Euro teams who prefer to skate and pass then hit it up.

Honestly, I wish the NHL would go to the international dimensions. All of the things they are doing now to increase socring - shrinking goalie pads, emphasizing obstruction calls, etc. - wouldn't matter on a larger surface. Naturally, the best talent would rise to the top when guys who lack skill cannot get near the speedsters.

They would have to retrofit every arena in the league. Not only would they lose revenue by removing 15 ft of prime seating on both sides of the rink, but they would have to get taller glass - the seats won't be close to the action anymore as the bowl would sit higher and the front rows would be on top of the glass.

They could play the games at the Richmond Oval :P, that would be big enough of a rink. And don't say it's impossible, they did put a rink in the middle of the Calgary Oval during the 88 Olympics or during the movie Cool Running.
