XXXX vs XXV skates, $ is it worth it

Recommended Posts

My first post, glad I found out about ModSquad Hockey as I love talking equipment. Here is the deal, 6'0 215 pound cooperall girdle wearing defenceman. Play in a mens advanced leauge non check and a couple of pick up leauges. Skating on 1152 ccm's, time for a new pair. Have tried on both the supreme one95s and vapor xxxx and xxv 9.5ee. Vapor fits better.

Comparing the specs and after a call to bauer customer service, the XXV is the same as the XXXX but uses texallium composite and different liner hydra...something. Bauer customer service did know their stuff and explained the difference but she did not sell me like a ford compared to a lexus. After trying them on the xxxx does feel more stiff but is it 250 dollars stiffer?

My point here is are the xxxx's worth the extra money? I read the reviews on modsquad and both the xxxx and xxv get good reviews. I am really having a hard time with this decision, I always buy the best skates money can buy or top line model but it seems as though these companies are pricing themselves out of the market. They make these "high performance" skates that do not last as long as a pair of bauer supreme custom 2000 that used to and used to cost 200 bucks for the pair.

Should I spend the extra money to get the vapor xxxx or run with the xxv?

Opinions appreciated!!

The XXV is the best bang for your buck in the Vapor line. The differences between the two are not even noticeable to 95% of players. XXV's are quality and you can take that extra cash you saved and waste in on some new gloves... Its a win-win scenario =)

i've got some vapor xxxx's sitting right here in front of me, but they just don't fit right. i'd say get the xxv's, but what do i know, i've got my own skate buying issues right now. i love the old custom supremes, especially in the "b" width, now they don't make them anymore. get the xxv's and get two pair.

I personally own the vapor XXV's in a 9.5 EE and they're the best skates I've owned hands down. I was in your boat, deciding between those and the XXXX's, but in the end I thought I would get all I need with the XXV's and I was right. I've had mine for over a year and a half now, and I skate more or less 4 days a week. I weigh a good amount and I skate very hard, and the boots are still plenty stiff for me. I'm more than content. I mean i can't speak for th XXXX's because I've never owned them, but I think the $250 might not be your best bet. Hope this helps.

I love my XXV's, had the previous generation for a year and it was still stiff as new when I sold them (wrong size). My XXV's haven't lost their stiffness, which is the big difference.

But I'm only 165 pounds, so if you're a powerful skater and have problems with skates being too soft, then you might want to get the XXXX.

I have xxv's and they're great. I only weigh about 140 though, and I was concerned that I'd never be able to break in the xxxx's; that was the main reason I went with the xxv's. I did think the xxxx's were noticeably a little lighter though, and if I hadn't been concerned about the stiffness of them, I would have gotten the xxxx's at the time. Having said that, the xxv's do seem to be the better value, clearly. Not that much less of a skate and significantly less expensive.

I Have the XXXXs and they are fantastic.

One thing that I can assure about is that these skates will last. Not the least bit delicate. I skate twice per week, minimum, and I am hard on skates...these things haven't broken down at all. Incredibly durable.

I popped into a play it again and there is an almost brand new pair of 9ee VVX's sitting there for 149 bucks. Dont even have a puck mark on them. I tried them on they fit great. How can I pass this up, Can't beat that. I will wear these if they wear out, I'll get the xxxx's. Thanks for all your input!

I would say NO dont spend the extra $$, XXV is a great skate, best skate I have ever owned. You will not be dissapointed. I play 2 times a week, 190 lb forward (yes I'm fat)

Technically I'm sure the XXXX are more light and somehow more advanced, but unless your are a pro, I cant see how that extra benefit would benefit a normal guy playing hockey. I would bet the XXV are 95% as good as the XXXX. I am a gear junkie, and if I had cash to burn I would buy the XXXX just to have the top of the line, but I dont......

I took the cash I saved on getting the XXV and put it towards buying a OPS... fyi, XXX Lite stick is the best stick I ever owned....

I have the XXII's and I wish I had spent the extra cash and move up to the XXV'S. I can tell you though my XXII's have held up great playing twice a week and sometimes three times. I weigh about 200lbs and love the way these skates feel and perform. I wouldn't go all the way up to the XXXX's because in my opinion they are not as good a buy as the XXV's for us poor saps who have to pay our hard earned cash to play the game. Judging from the way my XXII's have held up, I agree with a lot of the other guys and say, save the cash and get the XXV's because they are definitely the best bang for the buck. The XXXX's may be a bit stiffer but you probably really don't need the extra stiffness at the level of hockey you play anyway and for the little bit extra in features you get it just doesn't justify the extra cost for them.

I skated in the XXV's last night, man, they are different than my 1152's. The boot is higher and just plain ol stiffer. I am going to read all night about the Tuuk lightspeed 2, feels like I am skating on olympic speed skates as compared to a ccm. Im telling ya. You skate on something for 7 years then go to the tuuks' man, its like learning to skate again. None the less, not to get off topic very happy with the XXV purchase, its all I need, Im not a pro, never will be, just a dude trying to have some fun. I just hope I can at least get a few years out of em. 2-3 years, I would be more than happy.

I love my XXV's. Nice find for $149. Do forget to have them baked, get them formed to your foot and not their previous owners.

cheers.

Dude, that $250 is going to buy you two X's versus only getting one V. Everyone knows that an X is way more valuable than a V, and you'll be getting two more. Most definitely worth the $250.

Get them profiled, add some forward pitch...you will feel like you're back home.

I'm skating on xxxx's, but a few of my buddies who are excellent skaters decided to go with the xxv's, and they love them.

These guys were all coming from either older vapor xx's or xxx's and they felt that the xxv's were more comparable to their old skates. Everybody I know that has purchased the xxv's has been extremely happy with them.
