Holder Stiffness

Recommended Posts

Alright, I've been a custom+ plus user all my life and had them put on my One95's but they're 253's instead of the 263's I've used because of having to drop down to a 6 in the 95's. With the custom+ I now feel to far on my heels and having a harder time with the shorter runner length than I thought I would....So my issue is that I'm looking to get a holder with a set up like the LS 2.1 for the runner length and holder height, but I have problems with my knees and hips and I'm worried how the stiffness of the LS 2.1 will affect them. Anyone that has made the switch from the custom+ I would really appreciate any insight you can give me.

I had a similar question about the One95's that I am ordering custom.

You can fit a larger holder on your skates and you should be able to stay with the Custom +. The holder will hang off a little bit in the front and back, but the excess can be ground off.

JR and the other experts would let you know if you have any other drilling/installation issues.

I should have made it more clear but my question isn't about the holder fitting, but more about the stiffness of the LS 2.1 affecting my knees and hips. I want the set up of the LS 2.1 for runner length and holder height but am concerned with the stiffness....Thanks for the quick response thought, your thread got me thinking about going to the 263 custom+ plus with heel lifts but I'm trying to cut down on cost as much as I can

I can't attest to the stiffer holder giving you problems with your hips and knees and I don't know if many members are or have been in a similar predicament. What I can say though is the LS 2.1 is a couple bucks more expensive than the C+ package. The difference you save there would be able to give you the heel lifts you need for the height discrepancy. A 254 holder should cost you the same as a 263 holder, if there's a difference, you're getting shafted unfortunately.

You are correct LS holders are stiffer, then Tuuk C+ - I believe a different material called Zytel plastic is used in the Tuuk C+, not sure what LS holder are made from - Does anybody know out there?, one thing is for sure the LS holders are much stiffer and they don't torque nearly as much as the Tuuk C+ - hence maybe the cause of your knee and hip problems....

You might also realize that the LS and LS2 holders are 3mm higher in the heel than Tuuk C+, more forward lean, and actually this may also be contributing to knee issues because now your knee is at a different angle, 3mm maybe small but makes a difference - I might be having the same issue and am thinking about putting C+ on my One95's and Bauer 8000's. - because I have Tuuk C+ on my Bauer 6500 with no issues, but they are now 5 years old and worn out.

I am curious did you have to drill new holes in your One95 to fit the Tuuk C+ holders?, because One95s come with LS2 holders and I was wondering if the hole pattern is the same? Is it an easy change for any local LHS guy?

Another option: does anybody know weather there be anyway to profile the LS2 steel to compensate for the 3mm heel lift difference in the holders, so that it would be more neutral like Tuuk C+ and easier on the knees.

Like yourself I've been a Custom and Custom+ user a long time--I'm 37 so 25+ years now (they were just called Custom back in the day). I have XXXX with the Custom+ because as it has more flex than the LS. I think my straight ahead skating is better with the LS but I think cutting and getting lower to the ice for maneuverability is better with the Customs. I don't think that LS will cause too much problem for knees and hips but maybe your body just needs to adjust. The other thing is to try and do some strengthening of the quads to help out your knees a bit. My $.02 . . .

Good informative post, I am in my 3rd skate with the new LS holders and I am getting more used to them - I think I am a little paroniod because I am coming off a small menicus tear which healed on its own under Dr's orders with rest and leg extentions with weights.

But from my experience now I agree with you, straight away in races for pucks I am faster with LS - but with Customs come a little more stability with cuts and dekes. I tell you one thing I don't miss the 2 tower hardware system of the Custom+, although with this new socket set I bought it works wonders with the tight squeeze hardware near the toe - with the 8mm socket as long as I have the extention and the key is the special swivel piece. ( Pittsburgh tools at Harbor Frieght ) Ha!

...and after searching on MSH the hole pattern is different between Custom+ and LS holders, but its "do-able"....

What skates were you on before with the larger holder? I assume it was either a 6.5EE or 7D in a narrower skate. With the wideness of the one95 you might be able to go up a size in the custom+ holder... Yes, they had to drill to fit it on there. That is where you might run into an issue, too many holes in the outsole.

I've skated on both and I like LS2 more but custom+ is a nice holder too.

Give it a try and see how you like it. They're both great holders... OR for the hell of it you could swap in PITCH. haha

Custom+ hardware is a bitch in comparison. LS2 is cake.

Well I have had 2 knee scopes in the past 2 years (one to just to clean up from wear and tear from years of b-ball and other was a small meniscus tear) so I know what it's like when you lose a little strength in your knee/quad. I haven't skated on the LS holders since '04 so I can't add much to what my knee would be like with a stiffer set-up on the LS.

TBL if your question was to me they were 7.5 Supreme 7000's.....I stuck with the Custom+ but went with a longer radius and had a heel lift put in and I haven't had any problems since

Wow you went from a size 7.5 Supreme 7000 to a size 6 in a One95's - I mean I heard people going down a 1/2 to a size, but that blows my mind. Oh well I am glad things are working out for you with the Custom+, BTW here is the tools I just bought to fix my old Custom+ hardware when they come loose: See the extention and swivel and the 8mm socket - All for $17, better than paying $54 for the tool on H.G.

I couldn't Agree more! I HATE replacing steel on custom+ holders!
