John Davidson as NHL Commissioner?

Recommended Posts

If anybody watched the last episode of "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" on HBO. Byrant Gumbels Monologue asks if sports leagues would be open to change, inspired by the election of Barack Obama. Politics aside he goes on to suggest ideas such as making Gearge Mitchel Commissioner of MLB and some other stuff.

However, what cought my ear is that he suggested John Davidson to replace Gary Bettmen as NHL Commish and first thing I did was scream yes. I personally think that JD would make a great commissioner. He seems like a very intellegent hockey guy and is respected by all NHL people. JD is canadian and knows hockey and has been in America his whole adult life, so I think he understands the country and why hockey isn't catching on.

JD could lead the NHL and hockey into it's greatest period.

I grew up in NYC watching JD and Rangers, I love this guy. If there was an election I'd vote JD.

Agreed. That would be really good for the league. It's something that the nhl needs really badly. JD knows his stuff.

Doesn't JD have an ownership stake in the Blues? That would pose a problem. As for MLB, it's going to be Bush. Originally, it was supposed to happen right away. I think they will wait a year or two before doing it now.

Gee, I'd bet JD would give up his ownership stake in the Blues if offered the NHL commish job. However, the idea is great but in all likelihood would never happen. Bettman and Daly are entrenched in the NHL offices.

With this kind of thinking, put John Madden in charge of the NFL and Charles Barkley in charge of the NBA. Baseball? Who cares...........

Those two are morons, not even remotely comparable.

As if any of this might ever happen.

MLB+Pete Rose=Win

I don't think you could compare John Davidson to Madden and Barkley, Davidson does more than broadcasting nowadays and is very knowledgeable in the game. Don't rag on me for bringing in this name, as I don't know much about him and his situation but just as a question, would Colin Campbell be a good candidate?

I'm hoping JD does become commissioner one day. First we need the owners to get rid of Bettman. I can't REALLY pinpoint one thing that Bettman did wrong, that another GM would have done differently. However, the NHL's steady decline in popularity since he's taken over, shows that something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Maybe we need to give the "new NHL" a chance to blossom.

The NHL is ready for a change. Just like citizins in the USA were ready for new leadership, I think all NHL fans are ready for a new direction and make it more noticable to the general sports fan. I think JD could do that. He sure as hell can't do anyworse.

Chadd do you really think that Bush, a US President, basicly the ex "president of the free world" would really be an MLB commissioner. Even with his former ownership and love of the sport. I just don't see it. Really I'd be less shocked if the next US president would be a Korean woman named Mrs. Swan.

After being gov of texas, he was rumored to be the next commish. Winning the election in 2000 just kind of screwed things up a bit.

it could be worse - what if bush was rumored to be the next commisioner of OPEC or something...

i think davidson would make a pretty good commisioner - actually i think there are quite a few good candidates out there - how much longer does gary bettman have? Is it like a president where there is a set term?

...are you talking about his bid to be MLB Commish or just in general.
